Product Insights
The Moon Lamp by Simons Maison is a designer lighting piece that uses an asymmetrical suspended form and internal light refraction to create a dynamic two-moon optical illusion from any angle, offering a serene, sculptural presence whether on or off. Priced at CAD 279—roughly ten times a basic moon lamp—it delivers a poetic, weightless aesthetic with a durable ABS/polycarbonate body and cordless rechargeability, but at the cost of non-replaceable built-in LED and battery, which some buyers report degrading within weeks, leading to eventual tethered use.
Verified claims
- Design story
- The lamp intentionally uses an asymmetrical form and abstract double-moon illusion to evoke serenity, avoiding a realistic moon sphere.
- Optical effect
- The lamp's internal patterns refract light to create an optical illusion of two interlaced moons from any angle, and casts soft layered shadows.
- Illusion
- Light refraction through inner patterns creates a dynamic two-moon illusion that shifts with viewpoint.
- Differentiation
- Unlike 3D-printed single-moon lamps, this lamp projects two overlapping moons via internal reflectors.
- Design intent
- Asymmetric suspended form and cross-cultural moon symbolism give the lamp a poetic, weightless presence.
- Maintenance
- Use mild soap and a soft cloth; avoid ammonia cleaners.
- Serviceability
- Built-in LED and battery are not user-replaceable.

- At CAD 279, the lamp costs about 10x a budget moon lamp but is a designer piece
- Scale
- 6.75-inch width leaves two-thirds of a standard 18-inch nightstand free.
- Placement
- Cordless and rechargeable for placement on shelves, alcoves, and windowsills.
- Off-state aesthetics
- Sculptural lamp remains a decorative object when switched off.
- Material

Deep Research
How the two-moon illusion works
- The glass shade is intentionally positioned off-center on its stem to mirror the moon’s suspended presence — this deliberate asymmetry gives the lamp a sculptural pause even when unlit, distinguishing it from perfectly balanced lunar globe lamps that read as simple symmetrical objects.
- The double-moon illusion is produced by a delicately crafted internal pattern that refracts and splits light as it passes through the shade — unlike printed graphics or projections, this optical technique creates two intersecting moon shapes visible from any angle, making the effect a dynamic, viewpoint-responsive presence rather than a static image.
- The designer deliberately grounded the lamp in the moon as a cross-cultural symbol of serenity rather than a decorative trend, an inclusive emotional approach that makes the lamp read as a poetic, universal atmosphere piece instead of a themed novelty, so it fits into a wider range of interiors without feeling out of place.
Light quality and color temperature
- The lamp is engineered to produce soft, layered shadows reminiscent of moonlight rather than a focused beam — this makes it a pure mood light, ideal for winding down in bedrooms or living spaces where a gentle, enveloping glow is preferred over task-oriented brightness.
- The inner surface uses finely-worked reflectors to cast two overlapping moon images rather than one, creating a layered, sculptural glow that reads more like an art installation than a novelty night light — a key differentiator for buyers who want the lamp to feel like a designed object.
- When dark, the glossy black shade against the matte base and the asymmetric, suspended silhouette give the lamp the quiet presence of a modern sculpture — it earns its space as decor even when it's not illuminating, which matters in a room where a lamp that's off for most of the day must still look intentional.
- The integrated lithium battery allows the lamp to be placed free of a cord when in use, so the soft moon glow can sit uncluttered on a nightstand or shelf — a small detail that makes the lighting effect feel more magical and less tethered to a power strip.
ABS and polycarbonate build quality in real-world use
- The polycarbonate used in the Moon Lamp (found in the shade for its high-gloss, light-diffusing role) delivers impact strength roughly 3–4 times that of an all-ABS lamp, so the shade can survive a desk-level knock or drop that would crack a typical budget moon lamp — this is the same class of plastic chosen for vandal-proof commercial luminaires.
- With a heat deflection temperature of 130–135°C — far above the 90–100°C softening point of ABS — the polycarbonate in the Moon Lamp’s shade and housing will not deform, sag, or discolor from the warmth of the built-in LED, even during a full night of continuous use.
- Polycarbonate is inherently self-extinguishing, adding a flame-retardant safety margin around the built-in rechargeable lithium battery — a protective characteristic missing from all-ABS desk lamps at lower price points.
- To keep the reflective inner patterns crisp and the shiny black finish from microscratching, the polycarbonate surfaces should be wiped only with a soft microfiber cloth and mild soapy water — ammonia-based sprays and paper towels can dull or crack the surface over time, unlike rougher ABS shades that degrade less gracefully.
- Polycarbonate’s resistance to expansion and shrinkage under temperature changes keeps the lamp’s intricate suspended silhouette from loosening or warping, so the designed ‘sculptural calmness’ stays crisp through seasonal room shifts.
Ideal placement and scale for the space
- With a 6.75-inch width — roughly half the minimum 12-inch shade diameter typically recommended for standard nightstands — the Moon lamp takes up only about one-third of an 18-inch-wide bedside surface, leaving generous room for a phone, book, or water glass, and it slots naturally onto narrow console tables (12–16 inches) where a full-size lamp would visually overwhelm.
- Powered by a built-in lithium battery and free from wall sockets, it can be placed in bookshelf alcoves, on a windowsill, or as a dining-table centerpiece — exactly the kind of underlit corners that lighting designers highlight as ideal for rechargeable lamps, where cable clutter would otherwise spoil the look.
- Its asymmetric suspended shade and glossy‑black finish, combined with a height comparable to a mid‑sized vase, make it read as a decorative object rather than a functional task light; on a credenza or console among curated objects, it holds its own even when off — a quality the design itself frames as “sculptural calmness” and a “genuine work of art.”
- At 13.75 inches, it is short enough to tuck comfortably beneath a tall upholstered headboard (50+ inches) — where a standard 24‑inch lamp would look swallowed — yet it won’t tower over a low platform bed the way a taller lamp would, so it creates a low, intimate layer of light that complements both grand and minimal bedroom architecture.
How the Moon Lamp compares to cheaper alternatives
- At CAD 279, this lamp costs roughly ten times the $17.97–$28.97 range of the most recommended budget moon lamps like the Brightworld and Mydethun models, placing it in a different product class—decorative designer lighting rather than impulse-buy room gadgets—so the relevant comparison is not more moon lamps but other sculptural table lamps in a similar price tier.
- When powered off, the shiny black shade with its asymmetric suspended shape and contrasting matte base functions as a standalone sculpture—unlike spherical moon lamps that read as inert plastic objects when unlit, this lamp is designed to be admired even in daylight, giving it year-round decorative utility.
- At 13.75 inches tall, it stands over twice the height of the typical 5.9-inch moon lamp and occupies a footprint beyond a desk ornament—it demands a place on a side table or shelf much like a small table lamp, anchoring a corner of a room rather than just adding a glow.
- The most popular moon lamps, including Brightworld’s 5.9-inch model, are 3D-printed PLA, a biodegradable filament that can feel brittle and lightweight; the Simons lamp uses ABS and polycarbonate, engineering plastics typical of durable consumer electronics, giving it a glossier, heavier, and less fragile physical presence.
- Instead of the crater-textured sphere that dominates the moon lamp market, this lamp uses finely-worked reflective patterns inside the shade to project a ‘striking illusion of two interlaced moons’—an abstract, dreamlike effect that none of the NASA-topography replicas deliver, making it a conversation piece rather than a novelty.
Long-term lifespan of integrated LED and battery
- The built-in LED and lithium battery are sealed within the ABS/polycarbonate shell with no user-serviceable doors or sockets — when the battery eventually degrades, the lamp must be either permanently tethered to its USB cord or replaced, a design trade-off that preserves the sculptural, cord-free silhouette.

Battery failure on moon lamp
I bought one of these awhile ago but the battery in it failed after less than a week. Wouldn’t hold any charge, company was unwilling to work with me for a return or exchange too. Legitimately was so pretty though and mine definitely looked like the moon too. I hope yours doesn’t suffer the same fate!!!
