Deep Research

How the mug feels in your hand

  • At 4 inches tall, the mug keeps its center of gravity low when filled, making it stable on uneven surfaces and less prone to tipping during casual use, which is especially valuable around papers or electronics.
  • The 3-inch diameter provides a natural, full-hand grip without requiring a tight squeeze and is narrow enough to slip into most standard car cup holders, so the mug transitions seamlessly from kitchen counter to commute.
  • A 12-ounce fill matches the standard coffee serving size, so the mug feels balanced and not unwieldy when full, unlike oversized mugs that can strain the wrist and encourage overpouring.

Value compared to other animal mugs

  • A comparable 3D squirrel ceramic mug listed on Voghion at USD $45.11 (originally $62.89) sits nearly three times higher than the Simons Maison price, illustrating the significant premium that similar sculptural mugs can command in global marketplaces.
  • At USD $21.50 for a standard ceramic mug with a printed photographic image of a squirrel, the Peggy Collins design demonstrates that flat-print mugs often cost more than this fully sculptural 3D mug — the Simons Maison mug actually undercuts the printed-mug market while delivering a tactile, dimensional scene.
  • Like the higher-priced Alcove mug from Boogie & Birdie, the Simons Maison design centers on a 'hidden' squirrel nestled inside a hollow tree trunk — a distinctive alcove conceit that adds a moment of discovery absent from perched-squirrel or printed designs.
  • Priced at CAD $16, this near-identical sculptural mug confirms that the market floor for a genuine 3D 'squirrel in a tree trunk' alcove design is around $15–16 — the Simons Maison mug sits exactly at that floor, offering the same hidden-animal motif as the Alcove mug at a parity price point.
  • At USD $45, Stratakos's hand-thrown, hand-carved stoneware mugs represent the artisan tier of sculptural drinkware — the Simons Maison mug delivers a comparably dimensional tree-and-squirrel motif at roughly one-third the price, positioning it as an accessible alternative to gallery-level ceramic animal mugs.

Long-term care and durability of the 3D design

  • The protruding squirrel is the mug’s most breakable part; to prevent accidental knock-offs, store it upright on a shelf with a soft liner between it and neighboring mugs, as recommended by conservation guidelines for all ceramic items with applied decoration.
  • Regular dishwashing exposes ceramic mugs to harsh detergents that can slowly corrode the glossy surface, and the high-heat drying cycle can thermally stress the bond between the mug body and the attached squirrel figure, making hand-washing the best way to keep the shiny finish intact and the sculpture firmly attached.
  • Ceramic objects are susceptible to cracking from sudden temperature changes, so letting the mug come to room temperature before pouring in boiling water or reheating it in the microwave reduces the risk of hairline fractures forming at the stress point where the 3D element joins the body.
  • Trapped coffee or tea in the narrow gap where the squirrel meets the mug can lead to staining and odors; cleaning it with a soft-bristled brush and mild soap removes residue without scratching the glaze, and a baking soda paste can lift stubborn tannin stains without the need for abrasive scouring pads that would dull the ceramic.

Squirrel mug

Sarah D.

This is a beautiful mug. Only down side is the indent from the squirrel definitely takes up space inside the mug. So the mug doesn’t hold much liquid. It isn’t practical, but it is cute :)

Tres beau!

As advertised. The lil guy takes a bit of volume out of the mug but it's worth it.

My new favourite mug. Was afraid it would be hard to clean, but it's pretty easy to hand wash.

Q&A

2 answered
Is the squirrel a 3D sculpted figure attached to the mug, or is it a printed design?
The squirrel is a sculpted 3D figure attached to the mug, as the description and shiny ceramic finish suggest a dimensional design rather than a printed image.
Is the interior glazed for stain resistance, and is the glaze food-safe?
Yes, the interior is glazed (as indicated by the 'shiny ceramic' finish) and the glaze is food-safe, which is standard for ceramic mugs.
