Product Insights
Duralex's Picardie Small Clear Glasses Set of 4 is a 16 CAD tempered glass tumbler set, designed with nine faceted sides that prevent stacking lock and create an iconic silhouette. The glasses are 2.5-3.5 times stronger than ordinary glass, withstand thermal shocks of at least 130°C, and shatter into non-sharp pieces like automotive glass when dropped, making them durable enough for restaurant use and reported to last over 20 years at home. At this price, they are cheaper over two decades than repeatedly buying ordinary glasses. However, their 8 oz (250 ml) capacity may be smaller than expected, and while they survive 13 drops onto hardwood and 8 onto marble from 3 feet, recent batches have shown issues like bubbles, rough seams, or spontaneous shattering in dishwashers. Usage precautions include avoiding thermal extremes, using mild detergents, inspecting rims for chips, and gentle stacking, as manufacturer packaging may not withstand courier handling. The faceted sides provide a secure grip, the rolled rim offers comfort, and the glasses suit a variety of drinks from juice to wine.
- Design

u/[deleted] in r/BuyItForLifeAnother user confirms:
I bought mine in 1997 - three different sizes (small being the ones pictured). I have broken maybe one glass in all that time. They have made it through the entirety of my two boys childhoods.

u/fazalmajid in r/BuyItForLife- Value
At $16, cheaper over 20 years than repeatedly buying ordinary glasses.

- Thermal shock
Withstands temperature swings of at least 130°C (EN 1183 certified).
Why this is supported
The tempering process heats the glass to approximately 700°C and rapidly cools it, locking in compressive stresses.
What makes Duralex glass so durable is the tempering process. It consists of sudden cooling by ventilation on the entire glass product which has previously been brought to a temperature of approximately 700°C.
duralexcanada.caThis process allows the glass to meet the European standard EN 1183, which requires thermal shock resistance of at least 130°C.
Duralex follows the European standard relating to thermal shock, one of the strictest standards, and even exceeds its requirements. Duralex products are resistant to thermal shock of at least 130°C, and up to 200°C for our cooking range.
duralexcanada.caThe glass is rated for use with liquids from -4°F to 266°F (-20°C to 130°C).

duralexcanada.ca- Safety fragmentation
Shatters into non-sharp pieces like automotive glass.
Why this is supported

duralexcanada.ca- Usage precautions
Avoid thermal shock: don't pour cold liquid into hot glass or place hot glass on wet surface.
Why this is supported
Despite its durability, rapid temperature changes can still cause breakage. Duralex advises:
To avoid 'thermal shock', don't pour icy cold liquids into a glass that has just come out of a hot wash cycle.
easyequipment.comSimilarly, after microwaving, the glass must be placed on a dry surface:

Why this is supported

Love them!
I have the large and small Picardie Clear Glasses for my daily drink wear and I love them. The quality is visible and can be felt. I was debating between the small and mini, and am glad I got the smalls, I think the minis would've been a bit too small for our daily use. They are beautiful and classically designed - if I can't find Made in Canada, I love products from the EU (these are made in France). Get them - you won't be disappointed!

We've put them through literally thousands of dishwasher cycles and I still wouldn't hesitate to use them at a dinner party. They're comfortable in the hand, tempered, and an all-around best buy.

1997 Purchase Survives Two Childhoods
I bought mine in 1997 - three different sizes (small being the ones pictured). I have broken maybe one glass in all that time. They have made it through the entirety of my two boys childhoods. These are really good glasses and I would be super bummed if the company folds or is bought out and switched over to making an inferior glass.

Drop into Ceramic Sink Causes Explosive Shatter

French User Recommends Duralex as Second Best
That's great, plus they're quite pretty with their timeless look. As a Frenchman, I've just bought 12 Duralex glasses, and I'm more than happy! I have a feeling they'll last a long time (all for around €40).

Spontaneous Dishwasher Shatter and Production Issues
I’ve had one spontaneously shatter in the dishwasher. Duralex changed its oven a few years ago and that led to a lot of production problems, even bankrupting the company. It’s back under new management apparently but there may have been some bad batches, definitely return or exchange them.
