Product Insights
The Great Jones Dutch Baby Colourful Cast-Iron Dutch Oven combines lightweight design and nesting storage with cooking performance that excels at overnight stock, braising, and roasting, featuring a snug lid and even heating; however, its matte enamel demands hand-drying and careful stovetop use to preserve its finish, and while dishwasher-safe, that practice may dull the matte look, and buyers report challenges with customer support and a lifetime warranty that excludes cosmetic damage.

Deep Research
Nesting design with The Dutchess for storage
- At 11 pounds total, the Dutch Baby is light enough that most users can comfortably lift it in and out of the Dutchess for daily use, avoiding the frustration of heavy, nested cookware.
- Great Jones engineered the Dutch Baby's dimensions specifically so it nests inside the 6.75-quart Dutchess, turning the two-pot set into a single-footprint system that saves cabinet space for small kitchens.
How the matte enamel finish holds up over time
- Great Jones' lifetime warranty specifically excludes 'scratches, dents, scuffs, stains, color changes, minor paint chips' and normal wear and tear, meaning any dulling or marking of the matte exterior is considered acceptable aging and is not eligible for replacement — the guarantee covers structural integrity, not looks.
- The Reviewed.com test explicitly notes that the colorful exterior 'may not be built to last,' setting the expectation that the matte finish will show scratches, scuffs, and dulling over time — a characteristic that reframes cosmetic wear as a natural patina rather than a flaw.
- The product instructions direct owners to 'hand wipe after cleaning' — a step that is especially critical for a matte enamel surface, as air-drying can leave visible water spots and mineral streaks that are harder to polish out on a non-glossy finish.
- Most high-end enameled Dutch ovens advise against machine washing, but the Dutch Baby is explicitly dishwasher-safe, which means owners can prioritize convenience without voiding the warranty — though frequent dishwasher use may accelerate the matte finish's evolution toward a more mellowed appearance.
How the design and colors look in real kitchens
- Unlike the glossy enamel typical of heritage brands, the Dutch Baby's matte enamel exterior gives it a contemporary, low-sheen look that softens its visual footprint on the stovetop and blends more easily into modern, minimalist kitchen settings.
- User reviews on Great Jones's site characterize the Dutch Baby as 'super attractive and funky' and 'perfect for the modern kitchen,' confirming that its cheerful, unconventional look resonates with buyers who want their cookware to double as a personality-driven countertop statement.
Cooking performance for small-batch recipes
- The pot held an uninterrupted light bubble overnight while making stock, demonstrating steady low-end temperature control that prevents scorching when reducing small volumes of broth or bone stock.
- In a 4-hour wine-braised short rib test, the pot first delivered a high-heat sear, then held a low consistent simmer, yielding fork-tender meat and a glossy jus that released cleanly—confirming that small-batch braises won't suffer from hot spots or sticking.
- Despite its compact volume, the Dutch Baby handled a 3.5-pound chicken and two Cornish hens in testing; covered roasting kept the meat moist, then uncovering crisped the skin—making it a legitimate roasting vessel for a two-person meal.
- The tight-fitting lid was key to preventing moisture loss during a 4-hour braise and an overnight stock, ensuring that small-batch liquid-rich dishes don't reduce too fast or require mid-cook top-ups.
- The interior enamel is a light grey specifically chosen so one can see butter browning clearly—a critical visual cue when charring small portions—while being dark enough to resist staining with regular use.
Value compared to other small Dutch ovens
- The Dutch Baby’s matte enamel finish sets it apart from the glossy surfaces typical of cast-iron Dutch ovens, and with six vivid, saturated colors — including Broccoli green and Blueberry blue — it functions as a countertop display piece in addition to a cooking tool.
- Unlike most enameled cast-iron Dutch ovens that explicitly warn against machine washing, the Dutch Baby is rated dishwasher-safe, removing the chore of hand-scrubbing and making it far more practical for the frequent small-batch cooking it is sized for.
- The interior enamel is a medium grey — light enough to track butter browning and caramelization, yet dark enough to resist staining better than the bright white interiors found on many mid-range and premium Dutch ovens, which means it stays looking cleaner after repeated use.
- The Dutch Baby is engineered to nest concentrically inside the larger 6.75-quart Great Jones Dutchess, a stacking storage trick that frees up cabinet space for owners of both pieces and has no parallel among competing cookware families.

Q&A
6 answered- What is the exact weight of the Dutch Baby Dutch oven (with and without lid)?
- The Dutch Baby weighs 11 lbs total with the lid on. The weight without the lid is not specified in the product data.
- Is the lid tight-fitting enough to trap steam for baking artisan bread?
- Yes, the lid fits snugly and retains moisture well, making it suitable for baking artisan bread. In testing, it produced a crusty loaf with good steam retention [1]. The Dutch Baby is oven safe up to 500°F, which accommodates typical bread baking temperatures.
- How does the enamel interior resist chipping and scratching compared to other brands like Le Creuset or Staub?
- The enamel interior is scratch-resistant; in testing, the occasional use of metal utensils did not cause deterioration [1]. However, because the Great Jones brand is relatively young (about 4 years old), long-term durability against chipping compared to established brands like Le Creuset or Staub is not yet proven [2].
- Can this Dutch oven be used on a glass-top electric stove without scratching the surface?
- Yes, the Dutch Baby is compatible with glass-top electric stoves, as it works on all cooktops including induction [1]. To avoid scratching the glass surface, avoid sliding the pot and lift it when moving. The matte exterior can be marked if dragged across rough surfaces [2].
- How reliable is Great Jones customer service?
- Generally unreliable; many customers report unresponsive support, lost orders, and difficulty obtaining refunds or replacements.
- How does Great Jones compare to premium brands like Le Creuset?
- Some users find Great Jones performs similarly or better in ease of cleaning, but long-term durability is unproven because the brand is young.

Appreciation for Great Jones aesthetics and round Dutch oven preference
I prefer Staub to Le Creuset which sometimes go on sale. Food52 has some they make with them. Great Jones look awesome and I'm obsessed with the blueberry colour, I just prefer round.

Negative customer service and shipping experience
Ordered 3 items in November. When I received the order it was totally wrong. There is no customer support. None! You email them and the auto reply says they're busy and will get to you in 14 days....and to not keep emailing or you'll be bumped to the back. No phone number to call. So far (15 days later) no response.

Positive cooking experience with Great Jones Dutchess
I have a great jones dutchess and it is absolutely amazing. It cooks great - I have made pork shoulder, a variety of veggies and risotto in it. I just love it for the recipes where you go from stove to oven. The enamel is so wonderfully non stick! It cleans so easily - easier to clean than my le creuset pan (though that one is an older edition so maybe not a direct comparison.) I have not used any other brand of enameled cast iron.
