No. 10 Corkscrew Bottle Opener Knife
The Opinel No. 10 Corkscrew Bottle Opener Knife is a French folding pocket knife featuring a 10 cm Sandvik stainless steel blade, a beech wood handle, and an integrated corkscrew and bottle opener. It is designed for picnics, outdoor use, and everyday carry, with a Virobloc safety ring that locks the blade in both open and closed positions. User feedback notes that the wooden handle may swell in humid conditions, and the corkscrew works well but can struggle with certain corks.

Product Insights
Opinel's No. 10 Corkscrew Bottle Opener Knife combines a professional five-turn tempered stainless steel corkscrew rivaling Laguiole at a fraction of the cost with a lockable Sandvik 12C27M steel blade and a self-standing beech wood handle designed for the Nomad Cooking Kit; while its beech handle swells in humidity, requiring periodic oiling or waxing to prevent binding, the knife resists chipping, is easy to sharpen, and provides a safe cutting and wine-opening tool for picnic and outdoor use.
Verified claims
- Heritage
- Stainless steel (Sandvik 12C27M) and beech wood; Virobloc lock patented 1955.
- Corkscrew
- Professional five-turn tempered stainless steel corkscrew rivals Laguiole at a fraction of the cost.
- Practical design
- Plain straight edge for clean cuts; the handle stands unsupported at the table.
- Swelling prevention
- Applying Danish oil or beeswax prevents handle swelling in humidity.
- Virobloc adjustment
- Swelling-related Virobloc binding is fixable with circlip pliers.
- Handle trade-off
- Buyers report handle swelling in humidity, but find it manageable with treatment.
- Injury hazard
- Users report serious hand lacerations from opener's jagged cap edges.
- Safe technique
- Lock the Virobloc ring, keep blade edge away, pry under cap.
- Cork compatibility
- Works well on natural cork; synthetic corks require careful steady pressure.
- Use cases
- Buyers report using the corkscrew mainly for camping; most prefer dedicated tools for everyday wine.
- Durability
- High humidity can swell the handle; acidic residues may corrode the steel, requiring care.
- Value
- Matches high-end Laguiole design at a lower price, but some find it mediocre with tough corks.
- Safety
- Virobloc ring locks the blade open for safe cutting and corkscrew use.
- Handle care
- Beech handle swells in humidity, requiring periodic oiling to prevent blade binding.
- Compactness
- Closed length is 13 cm (5.1 in), longer than typical compact knives.
- Intended use
- Designed for the Nomad Cooking Kit, for picnic cheese and charcuterie rather than EDC.
- System
- Part of the Nomad Cooking Kit: a five-piece set that folds into a compact 5x8x3 pack.
- Construction
- Shares Sandvik 12C27M steel blades and beech wood handles with the kit, with a Virobloc lock and self-standing handle.
- Corrosion resistance
- Resists acidic food tarnish; prolonged contact may still tarnish.
- Edge retention
- Blade resists chipping on hard surfaces and retains a functional edge.
- Sharpening
- Blade is easy to sharpen despite its increased hardness.
- Pocketability
- Larger than typical EDC knives, but light enough for comfortable daily carry.
- Handle comfort
- Corkscrew integration doesn't cause discomfort; lock ring tension can vary.
- Moisture sensitivity
- Humidity swells the beech handle, stiffening the lock; treat with oil or wax.
- Picnic design
- Designed to stand unsupported; part of the Nomad Cooking Kit.
- Food prep
- Daily kitchen use confirmed; lockable blade resists chipping and rust.
- Outdoor
- Outdoor users value the self-standing handle and corkscrew; beech wood swells in humidity.

- Gift packaging
- Includes an R-PET case made from recycled crushed bottles.
- Self-standing handle
- Folded beechwood handle stands upright on its own, preventing rolling.

Top commenter finds the No.10 corkscrew worth it for the novelty
I have it. I wanted it because “just in case”. It doesn’t make it uncomfortable at all. I use mine every single day in the kitchen (because I can) and I don’t notice the corkscrew. I’ve never used it because I use a Victorinox instead. Having it was worth it to me, just for something different.

Commenter sees corkscrew as useful but bottle opener as unnecessary
Imo it seems kinda silly to put a bottle opener on a knife, the cork screw though I could see getting some use on camping trips with the ole lady. Closed blade spine under a cap, leverage against the knuckles of the off hand and you’re good to go.

Criticism of Opinel handle swelling in humidity
I'm not overly fond of the Opinels. While there's a lot that I like about the Opinel knives, the wooden handles tend to swell up in the humidity and can be problematic to work with.

Warning about injury from the bottle opener
The caution you use in opening that is that of a man that has had the displeasure of gashing open their hand on a jagged half-opened cap. Stay strong, brother.
