Product Insights
The Simons Maison Round Burger Press ($12) offers a cast-aluminum plunger found in $15–$30 presses, paired with a BPA-free plastic base, to form consistent 4.25-inch (1/4 lb) patties that fit standard buns after cooking shrinkage and cook evenly even from frozen. However, fresh patties stick persistently while frozen ones release cleanly, and the non-stick coating can be damaged by dishwasher detergents or metal utensils, requiring careful cleaning with soft tools and storage away from sharp objects.

Deep Research
Maintaining the non‑stick finish for years of use
- Stashing the clean press in a dedicated spot away from knives, other metal tools, and moisture prevents the micro-abrasions and water spots that eventually roughen the release surface — even a quick wipe with a cloth before storing can keep the coating glide-smooth for the next cookout.
- Tackling baked-on burger residue with a 10–15 minute warm soapy soak — rather than chipping away with a scrubber — lets the non-stick surface release debris on its own terms, preserving the smooth finish and eliminating the need for aggressive cleaning that accelerates coating wear.
- The press's dishwasher-safe designation comes with a caveat common to non-stick surfaces: the alkaline nature and concentration of automatic dishwashing powders can erode the coating over time, and at least one maker of comparable non-stick presses explicitly warns that too much powder may damage the surface — a hand-wash with mild liquid soap is the more protective routine for maintaining slick patty release.
- Even though the coating is designed for food release, it's not metal-proof — a stray scrape from a stainless-steel spatula or abrasive pad can leave micro-grooves that turn your next batch of burgers into a sticking session; the guidance from non-stick cookware manufacturers is unequivocal: only plastic, wooden, or rubber utensils should touch the surface.
What $12 buys in a burger press compared to the competition
- The Choice 4.25" press explicitly states 'Hand Wash Only' to preserve its finish, whereas this Simons Maison press is fully dishwasher safe thanks to its separable BPA-free plastic base and non-stick aluminum plunger, eliminating the extra labor that makes some cooks skip a second batch.
- The 4.25-inch diameter matches the patty size of the Choice commercial press, which is designed to produce uniformly thick patties that fit standard buns after cooking shrinkage; for a press that costs less than the restaurant model's quantity-discount price, that’s a rare alignment of home convenience and pro-portion control.
- The cast-aluminum plunger—identical in material to the food-contact surface of the $14.99 Choice 4.25" Cast Aluminum Press and the $29.99 GasOne—delivers the same rigid, non-stick compression as presses costing two to three times more, because the BPA-free plastic base absorbs the cost rather than the pressing performance.
Why cast aluminum stands up to frequent pressing
- Because cast aluminum resists warping under load, the plunger stays perfectly flat after hundreds of presses, ensuring uniform patty thickness every time — unlike stamped metal presses that can bend slightly and produce uneven burgers.
- Cast aluminum naturally resists corrosion, so the plunger won't rust or pit after repeated dishwasher cycles — a clear durability edge over iron or untreated steel presses that demand hand-drying to prevent rust.
- The non-stick coating on a rigid cast-aluminum substrate is less prone to cracking and peeling than on flexible stamped metal, so the plunger continues to release patties cleanly and wipe clean effortlessly even after years of use.
How uniform the patties are and which buns they fit
- The press forms patties 4.25 inches (11 cm) across, fitting squarely within the 4–4.5 inch diameter of standard grocery-store burger buns; because raw patties shrink during cooking, this slightly over-sized raw diameter results in a cooked patty that fully covers even a 4.5-inch bun, avoiding the un-bunned edge or overhang that hand-shaped patties often produce.
- The weighted, rigid plunger compresses the meat evenly across the entire diameter, eliminating the tapered edges and thick center typical of hand-patting; this uniform thickness means the patty cooks at a consistent rate from edge to center, preventing the raw middle and charred perimeter that plagues irregular patties.

Made perfect burgers!
This press made perfect 1/4 lb. burgers that didn't shrink or warp. I cooked them from frozen.
