Product Insights

The Simons Maison Olive Gingham Tablecloth is an exclusive, machine-washable 100% organic cotton cloth priced at $29 CAD—roughly half the cost of linen and one-seventh that of artisan options. Its yarn-dyed small-scale gingham reads as a solid neutral from across the room while offering farmhouse charm that pairs with seasonal decor. The main tradeoff: it requires ironing after washing and shrinks 4-6%, so pre-shrinking is needed for a precise fit on long tables.

Shrinkage

100% organic cotton shrinks 4-6% after wash; buyers report losing inches on long tables.

Why this is supported

The product’s Q&A page states

100% cotton tablecloths shrink about 4–6% after the first washHow much does the tablecloth shrink after the first wash—approximately how many inches in length and width?

, and for a 58x58 cloth this is roughly 2.3 to 3.5 inches per dimension. However, one customer reports a much more severe outcome:

Unlike every other tablecloth I have purchased from Maisin Simons over the past 25 years, this one shrunk! In spite of the fact that I followed the washing instructions to the letter, the two identical tablecloths I purchased to cover my 11' 7" table (with nice overhang at both ends) shrunk so badly that they no longe…Customer review, November 9, 2025

This indicates that shrinkage can significantly exceed the estimate and ruin the intended overhang, especially on longer tables. A sizing guide notes that

at a 10-inch drop it covers a 38-inch square tableHow to choose the right tablecloth size — 58_58_square

, so any shrinkage reduces the drop proportionally.

Value

Priced at $29 CAD, roughly half the cost of linen and one-seventh the cost of artisan cotton.

Why this is supported

At $29 CAD, this tablecloth costs about one-seventh of handcrafted organic cotton options like KD Weave's $220 piece, with research noting it

delivers the same base fiber at a 7x price gap, positioning it as a stylish consumable rather than a legacy investmentPrice and value against similar tablecloths — artisan_cotton_price_divide

Against linen, it costs roughly half the price of entry-level options, and the key advantage is that it

swaps the rumpled elegance of linen for full machine-wash-and-dry resiliencePrice and value against similar tablecloths — linen_alternative_for_everyday_use

Buyers also reinforce the perceived value, describing the cotton as thick and premium, with some stating it feels more expensive than its price.

Heritage

Gingham's Malay name and French farmhouse legacy continue in this Simons Maison exclusive.

Why this is supported

Catalog research confirms that the tablecloth’s heritage narrative is grounded in history:

The word gingham comes from the Malay genggang, meaning striped or checkered, and was adopted by Dutch and English merchants in the 17th centuryThe enduring charm of gingham in home decor — from_malay_to_global_textile

. It later became a French peasant staple:

During the 1800s, gingham became synonymous with French peasant textiles, used for everything from café curtains to work aprons; that heritage is the authentic source of the ‘countryside flair’ Simons Maison marketsThe enduring charm of gingham in home decor — 19th_century_french_country_cloth

. Simons Maison’s exclusive, designed in Canada, continues this tradition as a curated modern object, described as

Design

Yarn-dyed olive gingham's small check anchors tablescapes without clashing.

Why this is supported

The tablecloth’s fabric uses traditional yarn-dyeing, which

makes the check an integral part of the fabric rather than a surface printThe enduring charm of gingham in home decor — yarn_dyed_construction

, ensuring the pattern remains reversible and resistant to fading. The small-scale check (often 1/8” to 1/2”) also creates a visual neutral:

. Buyers confirm the olive color is true-to-photo and pairs well with sage and neutral decor, aligning with the product’s color significance beyond typical picnic red.

Practicality

At $29 CAD, this organic cotton gingham is machine-washable and ~7x cheaper than artisanal options.

Why this is supported

At $29 CAD, this machine-made tablecloth costs

and trades linen’s elegance for machine-washable resilience: it

swaps the rumpled elegance of linen for full machine-wash-and-dry resilience — making it a more forgiving choice for daily family meals where stains and spills are routinePrice and value against similar tablecloths — linen_alternative_for_everyday_use

. Buyers report it transitions from fall to winter,

and also suitable for holiday feasts, noting that

Drape

Drapes smoothly with natural folds; small-scale gingham reads as warm neutral.

Why this is supported

User reports and product imagery show soft, natural vertical folds, indicating a fabric with moderate weight that drapes smoothly without looking limp or overly stiff. The small-scale gingham (1/8" to 1/2") creates a rhythmic surface that contributes to a smooth, confident drape and reads as a warm neutral from across the room, anchoring the table without visual competition.

Wrinkle resistance

Resists wrinkles but needs ironing for crisp appearance.

Why this is supported
Like most cotton fabrics, it will likely require ironing after washing to maintain a crisp appearance, though the material is designed to resist excessive wrinkling.Does the fabric require ironing after washing to look crisp, or does it resist wrinkles?
Seasonal versatility

Pairs with Christmas pine and spring daisies; true-to-photo olive shade complements seasonal tables.

Why this is supported

Customer review confirms the tablecloth works across seasons:

Fabric

100% organic cotton with yarn-dyed gingham that withstands laundering; ironing restores crispness.

Sizing guide

Each size variant is recommended for a specific table dimension at a 10-inch drop.

Why this is supported

Deep research mapped each of the seven variants to a table dimension assuming a 10-inch overhang: the 65" round fits a 45" round table; the 58"×58" square fits a 38" square; rectangular sizes from 58"×76" up to 65"×155" fit tables from 38"×56" to 45"×135", accommodating 2 to 12+ guests. Each size also works within an 8–12 inch overhang range, so slightly smaller or larger tables still maintain proper drape.

Ironing

Requires ironing after washing for crisp appearance; fabric washes well and irons smoothly.

Why this is supported

Despite being marketed as 'easy-care,' the brand's Q&A states that the tablecloth

Aesthetic

Small-scale olive gingham offers neutral farmhouse charm for seasonal decor.

Why this is supported

Care

Fabric shrinks 4–6% on machine wash; pre-shrink before DIY cutting.

Why this is supported

The fabric is machine washable and dryable, but buyers have reported significant shrinkage after first wash. One buyer exclaims, "

this one shrunk!Customer review, November 9, 2025

Q&A data indicates 4–6% shrinkage, so pre-washing before cutting is recommended for accurate dimensions in sewing projects.

Très beau coton! Mais pas disponible pour une table ovale…

Lovely, but needs to be preshrunk!

Robin H.

Unlike every other tablecloth I have purchased from Maisin Simons over the past 25 years, this one shrunk! In spite of the fact that I followed the washing instructions to the letter, the two identical tablecloths I purchased to cover my 11' 7" table (with nice overhang at both ends) shrunk so badly that they no longer fully cover the table. I have since purchased a third tablecloth to compensate for the shrinkage, however, I think you should know that this product is not up to your usual standard.
