The Db Journey 50 L Roamer Pro Split Backpack is a 50-liter convertible duffel backpack made from strong recycled polyester canvas. It features a clamshell opening that folds flat into two compartments, a main zip closure, practical front straps, inner pockets (including a mesh pocket and a 15-inch laptop pocket), grab handles, adjustable padded shoulder straps, and an adjustable chest strap with a plastic buckle. Designed in Scandinavia, it measures 51 x 28 x 32 cm (20 x 11 x 13 in) and weighs approximately 1.8 kg; note that its depth exceeds typical carry-on limits for many airlines, and it is better suited for daily commuting or gym use than strict carry-on travel.

Product Insights

The D_b_journey 50 L Roamer Pro Split Backpack prioritizes internal organization and structural support through divided compartments, polymer ribs, and aluminum rods that keep the load centered and protect a laptop, but its 32 cm depth and 1.8 kg weight exceed carry-on limits, trading airline compliance for comfortable, structured carry; the removable rods allow flat folding, and the Hook-Up system integrates with Db roller bags for modular travel, though the metal strap connector may snap and the recycled polyester canvas only repels light rain, while the sale price matches the Patagonia Black Hole 55L yet adds internal organization.

Verified claims

Carry-on dimensions
The bag's 28 cm width exceeds standard carry-on depth limits of 20-23 cm.
Organization
Two sealed compartments separate clean and dirty items and pack flat like a suitcase.
Structural support
Polymer ribs and aluminum rods maintain shape and balance under uneven loads.
Carry-on compliance
At 32 cm depth and 1.8 kg, the bag exceeds typical budget airline carry-on limits.
Load control
Aluminum rods keep the 50L pack centered and prevent slouch, making it carry more comfortably than lighter frameless duffels.
Frame versatility
Removable rods let the bag stand upright when inserted or fold flat when removed.
Hook‑Up system
Shoulder‑strap hooks clip onto Db roller bags for one‑handed airport travel.
Ecosystem integration
The Hook‑Up system builds on Db’s ski‑travel heritage, turning the Roamer into a modular piece of a larger travel kit.
Weight
1.8 kg weight trades airline carry-on compliance for structural integrity and organized packing.
Hardware durability
Metal strap clip may snap; limited warranty for gifts.
Weather resistance
Recycled polyester canvas repels light rain but is not fully waterproof.
Compressibility
Bag compresses to half volume by packing only one compartment.
Laptop pocket
Laptop sleeve in one compartment is protected from opposite gear by the divider.
Accessibility
Unzips partially for one‑side access or lies flat like a suitcase and compresses to half volume.
Value
Sale price $199.95 CAD matches Patagonia Black Hole 55L while adding internal organization.
Frame construction
Rib-cage construction and aluminum rods are adapted from Db's 2012 ski bag.
Strap connector
Metal strap connector may snap; warranty limited for gifts.
Water resistance
Water-repellent finish sheds light rain and spills but is not waterproof.
Daily commute
Packing one compartment turns the 50 L into a slim 25 L pack with a separate compartment for gym gear and a side pocket accessible while wearing.
Travel suitability
At 32 cm deep and 1.8 kg, it fails carry-on limits and consumes 1/4 of a 7 kg weight budget; compartments are shallow but piggyback hooks help.
Compartment design
Split-shell design divides gear into two compartments with laptop sleeve.
Carry comfort
Weighs 1.8 kg (0.3 kg more than Patagonia) for structured carry.
Modularity
Hook-up system attaches bag to Db wheeled luggage.
Rib-Cage Construction
Polymer ribs replace foam for lightweight impact protection and an upright stand.
Flat folding
Internal rods can be removed so the bag lies completely flat.
Reassembly speed
Reinserting the rods takes seconds and needs no tools.
Structural protection
Internal aluminum rods and polymer ribs keep the laptop flat and absorb impacts
Divided compartments
Central zipped divider and halved depth prevent gear from pressing against the laptop
Price vs Patagonia
Sale $199.95 matches Patagonia Black Hole 55L; full $330 costs $130 more
Internal storage
Split shell with laptop sleeve, mesh pockets; compresses to 25L; one external pocket
Build and comfort
Weighs 1.8 kg yet carries comfortably via Rib-Cage and aluminum rods; Hook-Up system; strap connectors may snap
Weather and dimensions
Recycled polyester canvas, water-repellent; 28 cm depth exceeds carry-on; good daily driver

lowLimited external quick-access pockets.

Source Threads

  • Critical assessment of Db Roamer Pro Split Duffel 50L carry-on suitability

That bag is a typical duffel with a square cross section: 51 x 28 x 32 CM and one dimension being too deep for carry on in general. 28cm (11”) is quite deep for budget airlines like Ryanair with 20cm limits and even US legacy airlines with 23cm limits. Ergonomically, it’s the typical box with pack straps and will park 100% of the weight on your shoulders. It’s also 1.8kg (4lbs) which is on the heavier side for a backpack. Definitely not the bag to take to SEA and 7kg carry on limits.

  • Positive review of Db Roamer Duffel for daily use

I have it and I've had multiple bags from DB. As for a daily driver (gym clothes, computer) this is by far m favourite (have it in black though). Very lightweight and easy to take with you. It has a mesh pocket in the top lid and a computer pocket on the inside that will fit a 15" but nothing more so pretty few compartments. Would have loved a better outside pocket for easy access but that is a minor thing. Hope they fix it to the nex iteration!
