Product Insights

The Rains Long Minimalist Raincoat, priced at 150 CAD and in stock, is a longline straight-cut urban commuter shell with a matte PU-coated polyester finish that provides excellent waterproofing in heavy downpour but lacks breathability, tolerable for short commutes. Its full-length snap placket offers adjustable ventilation and stride clearance, and the cinchable tunnel hood seals wind. While the PU coating is durable, ultrasonically-welded shoulder seams may crack under repeated arm movement, leading to leaks over time, and the coat requires spot cleaning only and air-drying away from heat, storing in a ventilated closet. Designed for bike and transit commutes, not hiking, the coat accommodates layers without waist shaping but is not packable for travel.

Verified claims

Breathability
100% polyester with PU coating creates a vapor barrier; not breathable, but tolerable for short urban commutes.
Care
Ultrasonically-welded seams are watertight initially, but the shoulder seams can crack under repeated arm movement and leak.
Drying and storage
Air-dry away from heat and store in a ventilated closet.
Cleaning
Spot clean with a damp cloth; machine washing can delaminate the PU coating.
Closure versatility
Snap placket allows fully closed, fully open, or partially snapped wear for ventilation and stride clearance.
Fit
Longline straight cut covers upper legs and accommodates layers without waist shaping.
Silhouette
Storm flap and cinchable hood keep the long silhouette stable in windy conditions.
Use case
Suited to bike and transit commutes, not hiking.
Build quality
PU coating lasts years but seams and snap durability vary.
Commute features
Long cut shields from spray, tunnel hood seals wind, and snap placket suits cycling and layers.
Waterproofing
Stays waterproof in heavy downpour but shoulder seam may leak with age.
Intended use
A raincoat for urban commuting, not for hiking or trail use.
Design
Long, matte-finish raincoat with a minimalist design and no lining for layering versatility.
Urban suitability
Best for city travel, not for hiking; ventilation adjustable via snaps.
Ventilation
Hood cinches to seal out rain and works with snap ventilation to manage humidity.
Snap closure durability
Each snap operates independently, so a single failed snap leaves the rest of the front closure functional.
Re-waterproofing
When the face fabric starts to wet out instead of beading water, a spray-on DWR treatment made for PU-coated synthetics can restore surface repellency; once the PU coating visibly cracks or peels, the jacket is beyond repair.

Best Raincoat

Nick M.

Built to last and a worthy wardrobe investment. Better than 100 umbrellas. XL is slightly long in the arms on my frame but the body of the jacket allows for ample room for layering.

Imperméable et amincissant

Michel A.

Je suis à l'abri des ondées et des averses. Le capuchon empêche la pluie de mouiller le cou. La coupe allongée amincit la silhouette. J'aime.

Couleur, longueur, légèreté, mon mari adore !

Good

Audrey D.

Le dernier bouton dans le bas du manteau s'est détaché du tissu, mais ça reste un bon imperméable. The lowest button was detached from the fabric, but overall it's still a good jacket

Imper visible et sécuritaire

Suzanne A.

La couleur est très belle. Toutefois, il serait encore plus agréable s’il était doté d’une doublure.

Snazzy but expensive

Susan R.

The style of this raincoat is snazzy however the snaps and the rubbery feel of the material used warrant a lower price point.

Très bon achat

Guaitan L.

  • Rains rain jackets praised for lightness and versatility in Dutch/Danish rain

Rains are the perfect rain jackets imo. Got mine when my usual rain coat (which survived Netherlands weather!) couldn’t cut it in the incessant Danish rain, and it’s been the best purchase of the last 4 years. I love that they’re light, dry quickly and essentially have no lining so I can throw it over anything and wear it even in summer rain.

  • A-line mid thigh Rains raincoat recommended for fit and style

I love my Rains raincoat. I’m shaped like a wobble doll (all weight on the bottom) and I’ve not had success with getting a decent fit with most coats. rains has an a line cut mid thigh raincoat that looks sensational. Cannot recommend highly enough.  Sorry - no hood packing though.

  • Rains described as stylish but non-breathable like a 'pretty tarpaulin'

These seem to be the best for stylish urban raincoats that are non-breathable, non-GoreTex. They are polyester or lined PVC, with Stutterheim being the premium and more expensive brand. Rains is like wearing a pretty tarpaulin.

  • Rains raincoat great for commuting but not for hiking due to mobility needs

RAINS is a Scandinavian brand designed to for people to bike/public transit commute in really wet, windy weather. I have a RAINS raincoat and backpack that keeps me perfectly dry through Amsterdam fall/winter/spring. That being said, I also have a Patagonia raincoat that I use for hiking because it works better for the mobility you need while hiking. I think it depends on where you will be wearing your raincoat the most.

  • Waterproof and stylish but not packable or breathable for travel

I have a zippered rains jacket and the material is very thick and rubbery, definitely not that Packable or breathable and I don’t travel with it. On the heavier side for a rain coat. Although the waterproofing is excellent, so far 3 years in rainy Vancouver without issue even in heavy downpour. It’s more of a stylish coat you can dress up if needed.
