Product Insights
The Large Loafer Suede Bag by JW Anderson is a fashion-forward statement piece—the sole handbag in the brand's SS25 collection, transforming a loafer shoe silhouette into a structured, gender-fluid accessory. Its core promise is aesthetic impact: a unique, gorgeous design that pairs with the collection's lightest fabrics and matching loafers, offering maximum sensory contrast and styling duality across genders. However, that vision comes with steep functional tradeoffs: a narrow opening and rough zipper restrict access and scratch hands, the thin strap digs into the rib cage, the permanently attached loafer insert limits flat items and prevents fitting a 13-inch laptop, and the split-grain suede scratches from minimal contact, requiring diligent care with specialized products. Buyers see the $3000 CAD price as fair compared to higher-end alternatives like Loewe, but the design-led tradeoffs cause a sentiment divide—loved for its look, hated for daily usability, leading to many returns.
- Zipper
Buyers report the zipper is rough and unlikely to become smooth.
Why this is supported
Reddit users and Q&A sources confirm the zipper is rough. One user states,
the zipper is pretty rough
u/newyork_newyork_ in r/handbagsThe same user, who tried all three sizes and leather options, adds,
I tried all 3 sizes and leather options

may become slightly smoother with regular use, but there is no guarantee
How does the zipper quality compare to other bags in this price range, and is it expected to improve with use?. However, some users of the larger size have not experienced roughness; one reported,
I've had no issues on that front with this size.
u/Illustrious_Ad6548 in r/handbags- Opening
Narrow opening restricts access, scratches hands and bag, and won't fit a laptop.
Why this is supported
Multiple sources confirm the bag's opening is narrow. One user describes it as
the opening is not wide
u/newyork_newyork_ in r/handbags, while another calls it a
tiny opening
u/AdAppropriate1592 in r/handbags. A Q&A source warns it is
a narrow opening that can scratch hands
Are there issues with the zipper and opening?. The bag's interior height of 10.75\" is also too short for most laptops:
. The suede material's fragility compounds the risk, with one user noting
The leather is super fragile (breathe and it scratches)
u/StillLurking2025 in r/handbags- Suede fragility
Buyers say the suede scratches from minimal contact and shows wear quickly.
Why this is supported
Catalog verified that the suede is extremely delicate. Owner reports confirm that even light contact leaves marks, with one describing the material as
The leather is super fragile (breathe and it scratches) but kinda thick.
u/StillLurking2025 in r/handbagsAdditionally, the suede is noted as thin and prone to tearing, and owners compare it unfavorably to Loewe's Puzzle bag leather, with one stating
the quality is nowhere as nice as Loewe
u/FullMoonEmptySoul in r/handbagsThe bag's narrow opening and rough zipper further increase the risk of scratching during daily access, and the suede's tactile appeal on the runway comes with a trade-off in durability.
- Recommended care
Official guidance recommends using a suede brush and protective spray from Collonil or Jason Markk.
Why this is supported
JW Anderson's official care guidance for this suede bag states:

u/pennylane_1994 in r/handbags, but the material quality is lower. The 80% split-grain calf leather composition explains the thinner, more fragile feel.
- Value
Buyers see the $3000 CAD price as fair given the lower leather quality, making it a cheaper option than Loewe.
Why this is supported
One buyer on r/handbags notes the leather quality

- Usable space
13-inch laptop does not fit; loafer insert limits flat items.
Why this is supported
The bag's interior height of 10.75 inches is insufficient for a 13-inch laptop, as the brand's Q&A states:
The bag's interior height is only 10.75" (27 cm), which is too short for most 13-inch laptops
Can the bag accommodate a 13-inch laptop despite the narrow opening mentioned in reviews?Additionally, the loafer insert is permanently attached, reducing usable space:
The loafer insert is permanently attached as part of the bag's design; it is not removable.
Is the loafer insert removable or permanently attached?Reddit users confirm even the large size has a narrow opening, making access to the interior difficult:

u/newyork_newyork_ in r/handbags- Practicality
Buyers report strap discomfort and rough zipper scratching hands.
Why this is supported
Users report multiple frustrations that hinder daily use. The strap is uncomfortable:
ridiculously thin strap, inability to shoulder it with a sweater on, rib-cage dig
u/AdAppropriate1592 in r/handbagsThe zipper is also problematic:
I don’t like the zipper on it though. Not that smooth.
u/FullMoonEmptySoul in r/handbagsand another user describes it as:
the zipper is pretty rough
u/newyork_newyork_ in r/handbagsOverall, these issues lead to a consensus that the bag is more of a fashion statement than a practical daily bag.
- Suede upkeep
Suede scratches easily and needs dedicated care products.
Why this is supported
Buyers note the suede is extremely delicate:

- Styling impact

- Material
Split-grain suede reported thin and scratch-prone, solidly built; care needed.

u/StillLurking2025 in r/handbags, confirming the suede is exceptionally fragile and marks with minimal contact.
- Collection narrative
The Loafer bag, with its permanently attached loafer insert, was the only handbag in JW Anderson's SS25 collection.

- Competitive positioning
Buyers compare it to the Loewe Puzzle as more structured and unique, but note lower leather quality at a lower price.

u/FullMoonEmptySoul in r/handbags. This positions it as a more accessible yet still distinctive choice.
- Design statement
The loafer silhouette is adored by buyers and was the runway's sole handbag.
Why this is supported
Buyers call the loafer silhouette
gorgeous
u/AdAppropriate1592 in r/handbagsand
love the design
u/newyork_newyork_ in r/handbags. JW Anderson presented the Loafer as the only handbag silhouette on both the menswear and womenswear runways (singular_handbag_of_ss25), and the suede version was intentionally the texture-forward choice (material_narrative_suede_s_role). The loafer concept even inspired the show invitation, and the bag was the centerpiece of the 'The Lightest of Them All' collection (the_lightest_of_them_all_collection_narrative).
- Sentiment divide
Buyers love the design but hate the functionality, causing many returns.
Why this is supported
A representative voice encapsulates the trade-off:
I HATE mine, not for the look, it's gorgeous, but the tiny opening, ridiculously thin strap, inability to shoulder it with a sweater on, rib-cage dig when crossbodied, and the smooth leather was scratched on opening. SO SAD.
u/AdAppropriate1592 in r/handbagsAnother buyer echoes:
I love the design but the zipper is pretty rough and the opening is not wide.
u/newyork_newyork_ in r/handbagsThis stark contrast between aesthetic admiration and functional frustration is the dominant theme, frequently resulting in returns or compromised daily satisfaction.
- Texture statement
Suede version provides maximum sensory contrast against the collection's sheer fabrics.
Why this is supported
Deep research confirms the suede variant was intentionally paired with the collection’s softest garments to maximize sensory contrast. This makes the suede version the texture-forward choice within the collection, designed to read most strongly on the runway.
- Collection role
The suede Loafer anchors the lightest collection and is the only handbag shown on both runways.
Why this is supported
Jonathan Anderson made the loafer motif the central thesis of the season: the physical show invitation itself was a leather loafer. On the runway, the suede version functioned as a deliberate tactile anchor—

- Care regimen
Use suede brush and water-repellent spray before first use; regular care maintains appearance.
Why this is supported
The brand recommends a specific care regimen for the deer-and-calf suede:
For the deer and calf suede, we recommend using a suede brush to remove dirt and a protective spray from brands like Collonil or Jason Markk to guard against stains. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.

Why this is supported
Users consistently report that the suede is extremely fragile:

u/AdAppropriate1592 in r/handbags- Design lineage
Transforms a loafer shoe into a bag, with buyers noting it is more structured than the Loewe Puzzle.
Why this is supported
The Loafer bag directly translates a classic loafer shoe into a handbag shape, exemplifying JW Anderson's tradition of recontextualizing everyday objects with surrealist, playful twists. This aligns with the lens of design lineage. Additionally,
this bag in particular is more structured than my puzzle

Suede Loafer bag quality review
I have a suede Loafer bag and the quality is nowhere as nice as Loewe but it is a nice bag. The leather is rather thin though but solid construction and the finishes are done well. I don’t like the zipper on it though. Not that smooth. Makes sense for the price point today unfortunately

In-person leather fragility observation
The leather is super fragile (breathe and it scratches) but kinda thick. It felt very awkward, and I guess I was expecting something more like the puzzle bag leather.

Larger size zipper experience
There’s so little info about it! I looked everywhere for reviews and there’s just nothing out there. I would have loved to see one in person, but eventually just had to cross my fingers and go for it. I’m glad I did, but it was a little anxiety inducing 😆. I have seen negative comments about the zipper being too short on the small version of this bag, but I’ve had no issues on that front with this size.

Zipper and opening issues across sizes
I love the design but the zipper is pretty rough and the opening is not wide. I would worry about scraping my hand or items reaching in. I tried all 3 sizes and leather options.

Functional issues with the loafer bag
I HATE mine, not for the look, it's gorgeous, but the tiny opening, ridiculously thin strap, inability to shoulder it with a sweater on, rib-cage dig when crossbodied, and the smooth leather was scratched on opening. SO SAD.
