Mott 33 Leather Messenger Bag
The Mott 33 is a leather messenger bag from Coach, featuring a zip-closed main compartment, an adjustable crossbody strap with a tongue buckle, and an interior snap-button pocket. It is constructed from genuine leather and measures 24 x 33 x 9 cm (9.5 x 13 x 3.5 in), suitable for everyday essentials such as a wallet, phone, and small tablet. Reviews note the bag develops a slouchier feel with conditioning over time and that the 33 size is best for casual carry rather than laptop transport.

Product Insights
The Mott 33 Leather Messenger Bag by Coach is a small, slouch-focused carry that softens and patinas with use, but its signature drape requires light packing — laptops force the larger 38, and the unlined, suede-like interior may peel if overstuffed. Full-grain leather arrives dry but conditions well, while the zippered top offers security at the cost of quick access, and the strap attachment point is a known failure point. The bag fits everyday essentials like a tablet, notebook, camera, and slim water bottle, plus a passport in the snap pocket, but cannot accommodate a laptop without losing its slouch.
Verified claims
- Interior
- The interior is unlined with a suede-like finish; loose fibers can transfer to contents, which some owners describe as peeling or flaking, though the surface is not delaminating.
- Slouch conditions
- The 33 slouches best when packed lightly; to carry a laptop while keeping the slouch, choose the 38 rather than forcing the 33.
- Care
- To prevent drying and cracking, condition the full-grain leather regularly with a quality leather conditioner, and avoid overstuffing; the unlined interior cannot be conditioned, so careful use is the safeguard against peeling.
- Material
- Owners report that full-grain leather softens, patinas, and slouches with conditioning or use; strap stays stiff.
- Size
- At 24 x 33 x 9 cm (9.5 x 13 x 3.5 in), the 33 fits light everyday carry such as tablets, A5 notebooks, and small daily essentials; it is not a laptop bag, and shoppers wanting laptop carry with slouch should choose the 38.
- Everyday carry
- The 33 is a small tablet/A5 light-carry bag: it fits an A5 hardcover notebook, an iPad mini or Kindle Paperwhite, a Fujifilm X100VI mirrorless camera, and a 12 oz S'well Traveler water bottle, with the snap pocket holding a passport or large phone while keeping the soft drape. It is not a laptop bag; laptops force the larger 38.
- Laptop carry
- The Mott 33 is not a laptop bag: a rigid laptop can fit but flattens the signature slouch, so buyers who need laptop carry should choose the 38.
- Closure
- The main compartment's zippered top closure keeps contents secure.
- Pocket capacity
- Snap pocket fits a passport or large smartphone.
- Slouch preservation
- Flat pocket design supports the bag's natural drape.
- Leather condition
- The full-grain leather may feel dry out of the box; conditioning with a quality lanolin- or natural-oil-based conditioner every three to six months prevents drying and cracking and softens it, but conditioners can darken the leather, so spot-test first and avoid harsh chemical cleaners.
- Strap comfort
- The adjustable leather crossbody strap closes with a tongue buckle; it is full leather but stiffer than the bag body, and some buyers find it too hard for all-day carry, though it softens with use.
- Padded laptop compartment
- The main compartment has just one inner snap pocket and no additional slip pockets, dividers, or other organizational features; the 33 is oriented to tablets and A5 notebooks rather than padded laptop carry.
- Strap keeper loop
- A movable loop on the crossbody strap gathers the excess tail when the bag is worn short as a shoulder carry, so the leftover strap doesn't swing loose against the side.
- Lifetime leather care
- Coach will clean and condition this leather bag free of charge at any Coach retail store for the life of the item; appointments are required and the bag may be left for a few days while it is treated.
- Repair warranty
- Coach covers quality-related repairs, including stitching and hardware replacement, free for one year; after that the brand's repair workshop fixes bags for $45 to $110 with a four-to-six-week turnaround.
- Leather shade variation
- The natural-grain leather is semi-vegetable tanned, so shade and color variations between bags or panels are intended rather than a flaw.
- New leather marking
- The vegetable-tanned surface shows scratches, water spots, oils, and handling marks more readily when new; early scuffing and luster are the starting layer of character rather than evidence of a bad bag.

Everyday carry as a crossbody messenger
For carrying daily essentials hands-free, this full-grain leather messenger has a zip-top main compartment, a snap-button inner pocket for smaller items, and an adjustable leather crossbody strap. At 13 inches wide by 9.5 inches high by 3.5 inches deep, it works as an everyday bag, though one reviewer found the 33 too small to fit a laptop while keeping the style's slouchy look.[2,4]
Softening the leather when it feels dry
One Coach Mott 33 owner reported conditioning the leather because it felt dry, then filling the bag with contents. They said the bag got softer and started developing patina within about a week, and they use it for work. This is a single customer's reported experience, not a guaranteed result.[1]

| Mott 33 Leather Messenger Bag: Choose this if you want a compact everyday messenger in full-grain leather: this black version measures 13 inches wide by 9.5 inches high by 3.5 inches deep, with a zip-top main compartment, adjustable leather crossbody strap, an inner snap pocket, and a signature storage bag included. Owners report the full-grain leather feels dry and stiff at first but softens and develops patina within about a week or two of use, especially once conditioned and filled. Note that one owner found this 33 size too small to fit a laptop while keeping the bag's slouchy shape, so it's best for lighter everyday loads rather than work tech.[1,2,3,4] | Mott 38 Suede Messenger Bag: Choose this if you want a minimalist brown suede messenger in the 38 size, with a 15.75 inch wide, 12 inch tall, 3.25 inch deep body, an adjustable leather crossbody strap, a zip-top main compartment, and a snap inner pocket. An Esquire reviewer describes the leather as supple but not delicate and reports fitting a computer, hat, scarf, and even a lightweight mac coat with room to spare, though one Reddit commenter who loved their Mott 38 wished they had sized up to the 56 for days with a lot to carry. Some suede softening with use is reported by owners, and one commenter noted they still needed to break in their 38.[5,6,7,8,9,10] | Mott Messenger Bag: Choose this if you want a black genuine-leather messenger for everyday carry, with an adjustable crossbody strap, a full-width top zip, and a roomy 48 cm by 40 cm by 11 cm body lined in textile. It suits one-size, understated branding, with a small front logo, tonal topstitching, a hanging leather tag, and an interior snap-close slip pocket for organization. Note the silhouette is flat and soft-structured, so it keeps a slim profile rather than a rigid boxy shape.[11,12,13] |

Excitement for scarlet color and hardware
Thank you for the product info! I wished they’d done a navy in this size but this red is fantastic as well. Also feel like the red with the silver hardware really works for me ❤️

Positive experience with Mott 33 despite peeling concerns
I absolutely love my Mott 33 and haven’t noticed any peeling (I’ve used it every day for a week and a half now). I also have a Brooklyn which has the same interior and no issues.

Conditioning transforms the bag, making it softer and slouchier
I conditioned mine because they felt dry and filled them up. Within a week they got softer and started getting patina. I have the 33 and the large Mott for work, and I adore them both.

Rapid softening of leather with only two weeks of use
Absolutely love my 33!! I’ve only had it for about two weeks and it’s already getting even softer!

Strap is full leather but harder than the bag body
It's completely leather but a harder leather. Not the same leather as the body of the bag. I wish it were just a smidge softer/pliable.

33 too small for laptop with slouch; 38 is perfect for work
I have the 38. I bought it for work so I could tote my laptop and notebooks around. I was initially worried it would be too small, but honestly it's comfortably roomy. I was initially leaning toward the largest size, but after seeing in person, it was way too big. The 33 is good for an every daybag, but if you want the slouch that the mott is supposed to have and still use it for work, the 38 is perfect. The 33 is too small to fit a laptop and allow the slouch.
