Product Insights
Paul Smith's Camberwell Brown Wool Suit delivers a V-shape silhouette via a lower-break, wider-lapel jacket and mid-rise slim-straight trousers with generous thighs, requiring sizing up one to two sizes and a waist size for athletic legs; the high-twist Italian wool offers natural stretch, crease recovery (proven by an Olympic gymnast's pommel horse routine), and water repellency, with extra back room for unrestricted movement, though the DWR coating slightly reduces breathability and fades with wear and cleaning, necessitating reapplication; half-canvassed construction is unconfirmed, but buyers report decade-long durability, and at $899.95 it undercuts Paul Smith's typical entry by 39% to match Suitsupply's price, positioning it as a value-driven alternative from a top-tier brand on par with Thom Browne and Tom Ford, though size options are limited to 38, 40, and 42, and care requires dry cleaning with no lengthening possible from the free hemming service.
Verified claims
- Sizing
- Sizing runs small; buyers with a broad or athletic build, or between sizes, should order one to two sizes up.
- Fit
- Size up one waist size for athletic legs.
- Construction
- The Camberwell's specific canvas construction isn't stated; Paul Smith mainline suits like it are typically fused or half-canvassed rather than fully canvassed.
- Durability
- Buyers report Paul Smith suits often last over a decade with proper care.
- Silhouette
- Lower break and wider lapels create a V-shape that lengthens torso and broadens chest.
- Back room
- Extra room across the back prevents the fabric from pulling when reaching forward, driving, or hunching over a keyboard, keeping the suit comfortable and crease-free.
- Trouser cut
- Mid-rise, slim-straight with taper below knee; generous thigh room.
- Crease recovery
- The high-twist fabric recovers from extreme bending, proven by an Olympic gymnast’s pommel horse routine.
- Stretch and comfort
- 100% wool stretches without elastane and has extra back room for free movement.
- Performance
- Wrinkle-resistant, water-repellent, and four-season versatile for travel.
- Care
- Care: dry clean only; DWR finish fades with wear and cleaning, requires reapplication.
- Breathability
- DWR coating slightly reduces breathability, but high-twist weave still allows airflow for typical use.
- Material
- High-twist 100% wool resists creases and stretches; satin viscose lining enables three-season wear.
- Seasonal range
- Comfortable from moderate summer days to cool spring/autumn mornings, suiting three to four seasons.
- Value
- At $899.95, it undercuts Paul Smith's typical entry by 39% and matches Suitsupply's price.
- Fabric and origin
- Italian-made 100% high-twist wool with natural stretch, crease recovery, and water repellency.
- Brand reputation
- Paul Smith is often mentioned alongside Thom Browne and Tom Ford as a comparable alternative.
- Size range
- Size options are 38, 40, and 42; no size 44 is available.
- Hemming service
- Free hemming service shortens trousers only; no lengthening possible.
- Tailoring details
- Trousers include pressed pleats and piped buttoned back pockets for a refined finish.
- Fit comparison
- The Camberwell is a tailored fit with a lower jacket break and wider lapels than Paul Smith's Soho (classic) and Kensington (slimmer) fits; Limehouse and Stamford are not Paul Smith fit names.
- Hem length
- Trousers come with an unfinished hem and extra length for shortening; specific outseam or inseam measurements are not published.
- Sizing reference
- The official model wears a size 38 jacket over a 33-inch chest, about five inches of ease; a buyer who typically wears a 40 off-the-rack will need a 42 or 44 to match that fit.

Paul Smith employee shares insights on suit quality and durability
I work for one brand (Paul Smith). Quality-wise I've heard we're one of the best when it comes to tailored suits. There's a surprising amount of loyalty due to the longevity, I've had several customers tell me their stories about how they still have the suit they bought 10 years ago but just doesn't quite fit anymore.

Advice on Paul Smith suit sizing and construction quality
Keep in mind they size small, take 1-2 size more depending on your build. Cheaper ones (glued models) won't last long, but they have a good selection of half-canvassed ones

Paul Smith brand reputation for quality and subtle details
Paul Smith makes fantastic stuff! I can’t really speak to their style direction these days, but they used to have kind of two tracks, both high end, classic British tailoring and high style British fashion. Expensive stuff. They’re known for subtle details.

Comparison of Paul Smith to Thom Browne and Tom Ford
+1 on Thom Browne here. I would also add Tom Ford to the list
