Product Insights

The Black-And-White Checkers Tufted Rug 120 X 180 Cm by Simons Maison offers an exclusive Le Germain hotel collaboration design with a 100% polyester pile that resists water-based spills, barely sheds after a break-in period, and is spot-clean only. Its black-and-white checkerboard pattern pairs with a wide range of decor styles, from warm neutrals to bold colours, and can be layered over jute or paired with cognac leather for contrast. Priced at $140 CAD, it costs more than mass-market 4x6 synthetic rugs but delivers a unique design heritage from a brand founded in 1840. The 47x71-inch size works for foyers, reading nooks, and seating zones when anchored under a sofa's front legs, but fails the standard 24-inch dining table clearance, limiting its use to smaller tables. The serged edges and woven backing minimize shedding and keep spills on the surface, while the spot-cleaning requirement is the main maintenance tradeoff.

Deep Research

Value versus other checkerboard or graphic rugs

  • At $140 CAD, this rug competes directly with mass-market synthetic 4x6 accent rugs like the Rugs.com Prismatic ($99 USD sale) and Outdoor Modern ($94 USD sale), meaning its value proposition leans on exclusive design and Canadian curation rather than on being the category’s lowest sticker price.
  • The rug follows Simons Maison’s model of Canadian design and logistics paired with production through global contract partners, which explains how the $140 price balances domestic creative control with the cost efficiencies of international manufacturing rather than a fully domestic supply chain.
  • At 47×71 inches (approximately 4×6 feet), this rug lands in the most versatile accent-rug size, large enough to define a foyer or anchor a reading chair while keeping the $140 CAD commitment low — ideal for experimenting with a bold checkerboard pattern without the risk of a room-sized investment.
  • This rug is a Simons Maison exclusive designed in Canada, drawing on the curatorial authority of its 1840-founded parent company and a homewares line that includes collaborations with luxury hotel chain Le Germain, so the $140 CAD price grants access to a design language that typically signals higher-end boutique home decor.

Styling a high-contrast checkerboard accent rug

  • Pairing this rug with warm neutral wall colors like taupe, mushroom, or bone — rather than stark white — prevents the high-contrast pattern from feeling clinical, letting the graphic design anchor the room with warmth.
  • Because the rug's palette is strictly black and white, you can layer in bold striped wall treatments or cushions without visual chaos — the monochrome scheme unifies disparate patterns into a cohesive look.
  • The rug's organized geometry can function as a neutralizer for bold primary-color furniture — a sculptural cobalt blue sofa or a high-gloss crimson credenza can sit on it without the room feeling unmoored, treating the floor as a controlled stage.
  • Placing the front two legs of the sofa and accent chairs on the rug psychologically unifies the seating arrangement, preventing the rug from floating like an island in the room.
  • A cognac leather sofa creates a stunning organic contrast against the black-and-white grid, the orange-brown tones adding warmth that offsets the rug's stark geometry.
  • For dining use, the rug must extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so that chairs stay on the rug when pulled out, preventing snags and maintaining a finished look.
  • Layering the rug over a larger natural jute or sisal rug frames the checkerboard with earthy texture, visually softening the pattern while adding sound-dampening weight underfoot.
  • Because the checkerboard pattern is strictly linear, introducing curved furniture — a round marble coffee table, a bouclé accent chair, or an arc floor lamp — softens the space and prevents visual rigidity.

How the polyester tufted construction feels and wears

  • Because polyester is extruded as a single long filament rather than short staple fibers, it sheds significantly less than wool or cotton rugs; a well-made polyester tufted rug may barely shed at all after an initial break-in period, keeping floors and clothing free of loose fuzz.
  • Polyester is a hydrophobic synthetic fiber that resists moisture absorption, so water-based spills like juice or coffee bead up on the surface rather than soaking in immediately, buying you time to blot and reducing the chance of a set-in stain.

Where is my item?

Jackie J.

I’m not sure why companies continue to use Dragonfly as their courier it’s been a constant problem for me. I almost never receive packages shipped through them. Time after time, I end up having to contact customer service just to get a refund because the delivery fails. Please consider switching to a more reliable courier. UPS, FedEx, and Purolator have all been far more dependable in my experience. I really wish I had received this item; instead, I’m left disappointed.
