Product Insights
The North Face Never Stop Water-Repellent Nylon Utility Backpack uses 100% recycled nylon with non-PFC DWR and 600D polyester to outlast competitors, with YKK zippers enabling one-handed operation in rain. Its organization includes a 16-inch laptop compartment, fleece-lined pockets for scratch protection, and a bottom shoe compartment, while a reinforced base lets it stand upright. Weighing 2 lbs with a women-specific design, it keeps heavy loads comfortable and fits MacBook Pro and Dell XPS laptops. The crinkly nylon fabric masks wear and gives a streetwear aesthetic with a tonal logo patch. A tradeoff is that the fleece pockets require spot cleaning rather than machine washing. At $105–150, it delivers more organization and durability than the $249 Rowledge 2, and buyers report the non-PFC DWR finish protects gear in rainstorms.

Deep Research
Women-specific fit and comfort
- The straps are set closer together and curved outward to clear the chest, a shape that keeps the load pulling straight down on the shoulders instead of splaying outward — on a 2‑mile walk with a laptop and lunch, that geometry is what makes the pack feel planted rather than constantly slipping and needing a hitch.
- The back panel length is calibrated around the typical 14–18 inch female torso instead of the 18–21 inch unisex span, so the pack rides higher and stays anchored against the upper back instead of sagging below the hips and bouncing when you accelerate through a crosswalk.
How it stacks up against similar backpacks
- Fjallraven's Vinylon F swells when damp to resist water without a coating, but the Never Stop's 70D recycled nylon with non-PFC DWR provides immediate rain protection and a softer crinkly texture that some commuters prefer over the Kanken's stiff, waxy hand.
- The Never Stop is one of the few commuter packs to line its quick-access pockets with fleece — a scratch-free haven for sunglasses and phone screens — whereas the Quince Puff Commuter and Fjallraven Kanken rely on unlined compartments that offer no such protection for delicate gear.
- At its entry price of $105 (and often less on sale), the Never Stop delivers a shoe compartment, YKK zippers, and 16-inch laptop protection for under half the cost of the $249 Rowledge 2, appealing to the price-sensitive multi-mode commuter who prioritizes organization over leather trims and convertible carry.
- The Rowledge 2 caps at a 13-inch laptop, limiting its appeal to users with ultrabooks; the Never Stop's 16-inch padded compartment accommodates larger workstations like a 16-inch MacBook Pro or Dell XPS, which matters for professionals who need screen real estate on the go.
- The Never Stop is built on a women's last with padded, contoured shoulder straps and back panel, unlike the unisex Fjallraven Kanken; a verified reviewer reports that under heavy school loads, the weight distribution is exceptionally good and doesn't strain the shoulders, a direct consequence of the gender-specific engineering.
- While the Quince Puff Commuter tucks shoes into a side sleeve, the Never Stop places them in a bottom zippered compartment that doubles as stabilizer — combined with the pack's stand-up design, the bag stays upright in a gym locker and feels balanced during a bike commute rather than top-heavy.
- Fjallraven’s Kanken radiates timeless Scandinavian simplicity, but North Face’s trend-aligned aesthetic gives the Never Stop a more contemporary streetwear edge, reinforced by the tonal logo patch and crinkly vintage fabric — a point of difference for someone who wants their commuter bag to read as modern rather than archival.
How the fabric handles rain and daily wear
- Every zip is YKK — a detail that signals reliable one-handed opening and long-term durability, important when you're reaching for a transit pass or phone under an awning while rain drips off the shoulder strap.
- The durable water-repellent treatment is explicitly non-PFC, bypassing the fluorinated chemicals being phased out in Europe and North America — it's a small upcharge that buys peace of mind for buyers who track their gear's eco-footprint.
- The nylon face fabric is intentionally crinkled to create a matte, broken-in look that echoes early-'90s outdoor gear — it also masks light wear better than a flat nylon shell, keeping the pack looking fresh over months of daily use.
- The body fabric is 100% recycled nylon, swapping virgin petroleum for post-industrial waste without sacrificing the handfeel or tensile strength expected at this price — it's a genuine eco-upgrade rather than a greenwashed label.
- The body is cut from 70-denier recycled nylon, a fabric class that keeps the empty pack weight at just 2 lbs — light enough for all-day wear without shoulder fatigue, yet dense enough to resist daily scuffs from turnstiles and train doors.
- In a reported buyer experience, the DWR finish kept a laptop and tech gear dry through an unexpected rainstorm — a real-world signal that the coating beads water effectively during short, surprise exposures, which is exactly the commute scenario the pack is built for.
- The bottom panel is reinforced with 600D recycled polyester, a yarn roughly 8.5× heavier than the 70D body, coated for abrasion resistance — it's the part that absorbs grit, wet pavement, and bus floor slides, and its rigid structure lets the pack stand upright unsupported.
Recycled materials and environmental footprint
- Both the nylon and polyester panels are treated with a PFAS-free durable water repellent — The North Face transitioned all new DWR treatments away from intentionally added PFAS as of 2025, so this bag sheds light rain without leaving fluorinated chemicals in the environment.
- The main body uses a 70-denier recycled nylon, a lightweight fabric that in high-quality recycled form matches virgin nylon in tensile strength and abrasion resistance — so the 70D shell delivers equivalent durability to virgin nylon while reducing reliance on virgin petroleum.
- The high-wear bottom panel uses 600D recycled polyester, a thicker, more abrasion-resistant material than the body, strategically deploying recycled synthetic where durability demands it most.

I have a small frame
I have a small frame so this bag is a bit wide for me. I hate the sternum strap because it can't be removed or its height adjusted. My favourite thing about this is the fleece phone pocket on top. It's large and has plenty of room left even with my large Ultra phone in it. It's expensive but I'm keeping it because it's organizational. Caveat emptor - the fleece laptop and phone pockets come in 2 different colours - black and pale yellow. I recieved a black one and exchanged it in-store for a yellow one.
Q&A
5 answered- What is the maximum laptop size that fits in the padded compartment?
- The padded laptop compartment fits up to a 16" laptop [1][2].
- How much does the empty backpack weigh?
- The empty backpack weighs approximately 900 g (2 lbs) [1].
- Is the footwear compartment separated from the main compartment by a divider or just a flat open area?
- The backpack has a dedicated secure-zip shoe pocket at the bottom, separate from the main compartment [1][2].
- Can the fleece-lined pockets be machine washed or require special care?
- The manufacturer does not provide specific care instructions for the fleece-lined pockets, but we recommend spot cleaning them with a damp cloth as a general precaution.
- Are the adjustable straps padded with breathable material for comfort when carrying heavy loads?
- Yes, the shoulder straps are padded and designed specifically for a woman's torso [1][2]. However, the product description does not specify whether the padding uses breathable mesh material.
