Product Insights

Vivienne Westwood's Nano Solitare Earrings (145 CAD, in stock, 5 stars from 2 reviews) are miniature icons: the 1985–86 orb design merges the Crown Jewels' orb with Saturn's ring, a punk-futurist symbol with cult status in Nana manga, on Dua Lipa, and the 1990 Portrait choker. Weighing 1.5g and 0.8cm tall, they sit delicately on the earlobe with an airy openwork cut-out, packaged in 100% recycled paper and a dust bag. However, the cubic zircon stones are glued and frequently fall out; no replacement singles are sold—only a new pair—though fallen crystals can be reattached with E600 glue. Cleaning requires a soft dry cloth, avoiding water and chemicals, and storage in the dust bag. The orb carries decades of subcultural cachet, but durability is a known tradeoff.

Deep Research

How the Nano size looks on the ear

  • Weighing 1.5 grams, the earring exerts almost no downward pull on the lobe — an underwritten luxury for all-day wearers who have experienced the aching fatigue of heavier costume studs by evening.
  • At 0.8 cm tall, the orb medallion sits well within the lobe of most adults and never competes with other piercings or larger statement pieces in an ear stack.
  • The openwork cut‑out around the Saturn ring reduces the visual weight of the medallion, so the earring appears more like filigree than a solid metal orb — a detail that keeps the design airy and delicate despite its polished brass and crystal construction.

Gift packaging and unboxing experience

  • In addition to the box, the earrings come with a signature Vivienne Westwood dust bag, which provides a soft, branded storage layer that protects the crystals and clasp while doubling the tactile brand experience during the unboxing ritual.
  • The branded jewellery box is made from 100% recycled paper, aligning the unboxing with Vivienne Westwood's public sustainability commitments and giving the gift an environmental credibility that resonates with the brand's ethically conscious audience.

The orb's history and Vivienne Westwood's cultural legacy

  • The orb logo bears a striking resemblance to the Harris Tweed mark, but Westwood's pioneering use of their fabric in her AW87 collection revived the mill's fortunes, so the similarity was accepted — a reminder that wearing the orb aligns you with a brand that has materially rescued British heritage industries.
  • The Japanese manga Nana by Ai Yazawa dressed its characters entirely in Westwood, making the orb a touchstone of otaku fashion culture — so the earrings hold a quiet layer of meaning for anyone who encountered the brand through that cult 2000s series.
  • The logo fuses the sovereign's orb from the British Crown Jewels — an emblem of monarchy since Charles II's 1661 coronation — with a planetary ring taken from astronomy photos of Saturn, so wearing this earring is carrying a deliberate clash of sacred royal heritage and cosmic futurism that defines Westwood's punk approach to luxury.
  • Vivienne Westwood designed the orb during a year-long Italian sabbatical with Elio Fiorucci, sketching a Prince Charles jumper that mixed royal British insignia with a Saturn-like ring — the earrings’ central motif was born from that exact creative moment, not from a later branding exercise.
  • Dua Lipa wore a vintage Vivienne Westwood multi-strand pearl orb necklace at the 2021 Brit Awards, triggering a TikTok-led resurgence that made the orb the ‘TikTok necklace’ for Gen Z — this earring taps the same design language currently amplified by that viral moment.
  • The orb first appeared as jewelry in the AW87-88 Harris Tweed pendant, but its most iconic iteration was the three-row pearl choker from the 1990 Portrait collection — that choker's decades-long cult status, fueled by TikTok and celebrity adoption, means today's orb earrings ride the same wave of recognition and subcultural prestige.

Beautiful

I am so happy I got these. They’re beautiful and shiny. The only thing is the post are really long which I suppose can be good or bad. I hate that they’re not solid sterling silver but overall decent purchase.

Q&A

5 answered
Are the stones secured with any adhesive backup besides the decorative prongs, or are they simply glued in making them prone to falling out?
The prongs are decorative only; the crystals are glued in, which does make them more prone to falling out compared to a prong-set stone. Community feedback confirms this, noting the stones can be reattached with a strong adhesive like E600 glue.
Is the 'sterling silver finish' a rhodium or silver plating over brass, and how durable is it against tarnish and wear over time?
The 'sterling silver finish' is a plating (likely rhodium or silver) over a brass base, as the composition lists brass. Over time, plating can wear and tarnish, especially with frequent wear or exposure to moisture. The care instructions advise avoiding water and perfume to prolong the finish.
What is the recommended method for cleaning the Swarovski crystal and brass to maintain the earrings' appearance?
Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear to remove oils. Avoid using any chemicals, jewelery cleaners, or ultrasonic baths. The care instructions recommend refraining from wearing in water, showering, or when applying perfume.
Can I buy a single replacement earring if I lose one?
It is extremely difficult; you will likely need to buy a new pair or find a second-hand single.
How do I fix a fallen diamond in my Vivienne Westwood Nano earrings?
Use E600 glue to reattach the diamond, as the prongs are fake and the stone is glued in.

  • Impossible to buy single Nano stud earring replacement

unfortunately you’re not going to find anyone, authorized seller or second hand, selling a single earring from this set unless by some miracle someone just so happens to be selling just the one. Your options would be to open up that drain pipe and get it out, order a new pair, wait practically forever until someone posts a single stud from that set up for sale, or if you want to go asymmetrical you can get this single stud earring of a different design over on [Ssense](https://www.ssense.com/en-us/men/product/vivienne-westwood/silver-suzon-stud-single-earring/15105571).

  • Fake prongs and glued-in diamonds cause stones to fall out

I believe with the Nano earrings, the prongs are fake and just there for decoration. Which leads me to believe that these are glued in. I hear a lot of complaints of people's diamonds falling out of their VW jewelry so they use E600 to glue it back into place. I'd use a Q-tip to dab the E600 glue onto the jewelry setting and then place the diamond in. Leave it alone for 24 hours.
