Product Insights

The Elma Aviator Sunglasses from Jimmy Fairly, at 99.95 CAD and currently out of stock with one review, pair a compact 54 mm eye/19 mm bridge acetate aviator fit for medium faces, not wide, with a 53 mm lens height that clears progressive-lens corridors and accepts custom prescription lenses from any optician. The frame is BPA-free, hypoallergenic RENEW cellulose acetate, 60% recycled and 40% bio-based, fully recyclable and plant-based though not home-compostable, and resists sweat and oils without green residue. Its core flexibility is a swappable lens system: it ships with orange Category 1 and grey Category 3 lenses plus 10 colour options; all block 100% UVA and UVB, and the Level 1 designation is tint, not UV. The main tradeoff is that the standard orange Category 1 tint transmits 43-80% visible light for overcast, indoor and variable conditions rather than bright sun, lifting dim-light contrast but shifting reds and greens warmer; polarized lenses are only an order-time option. Acetate also requires care: heat above 60°C can warp it, acetone, rubbing alcohol, hairspray and perfume permanently cloud it, and resting on the head is the top cause of stretching, though it can be heat-fitted at an optician or reset at home in warm water.

Verified claims

Lens tint
Category 1 tint passes 43-80% of light, suiting overcast, indoor and variable weather rather than bright sun.
Lens options
Ships with swappable orange Category 1 and grey Category 3 lenses, plus 10 colour options.
UV protection
All lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB; the Level 1 rating is tint, not UV
Tint color
Amber-orange tint lifts contrast in dim light but shifts reds and greens warmer than true.
Polarization
Not polarized as standard; polarized lenses are an order-time option.
Lens category
Category 1 lens transmits 43-80% of visible light, suiting overcast and variable weather rather than bright sun
Lens system
Ships with two swappable lens sets: an orange Category 1 and a grey Category 3.
Prescription
Acetate frame fits custom prescription lenses from any optician.
Fit
Compact 54 mm eye and 19 mm bridge fit medium faces, not wide ones
Lens depth
53 mm lens height clears the vertical space a progressive lens needs
Heat care
Heat above 60°C in a parked car can warp the acetate out of alignment
Progressive support
53 mm lens height clears the 30 mm corridor progressive lenses need
Adjustability
The acetate frame can be heat-fitted at an optician, or its temple tips bent at home.
Solvent care
Acetone, rubbing alcohol, hairspray and perfume permanently cloud acetate.
Headwear habit
Resting the frame on top of your head is the top cause of stretched acetate.
Skin contact
Acetate is hypoallergenic and resists skin oils, so it leaves no green residue.
Frame stretching
Pushing the frame onto your head is the top cause of stretched acetate; store it in its case.
Adjustment
Acetate softens in warm water, so a temple tip can be reset at home in about a minute.
Skin compatibility
Acetate is hypoallergenic and resists sweat and oils, so no green residue on skin.
Material
Cellulose acetate frame is cut from RENEW acetate, 60% recycled and 40% bio-based, and fully recyclable.
Sustainability
The cellulose acetate frame is plant-based from renewable wood pulp and is not home-compostable.
Hypoallergenic
BPA-free acetate frame won't trigger nickel allergies or leave green residue
Frame care
Wearing the frame on your head stretches it; acetone or rubbing alcohol clouds the acetate permanently

Elma Aviator Sunglasses: Choose this if you want lightweight, comfortable cellulose acetate aviator-style sunglasses in a glossy tortoiseshell finish with a keyhole bridge, peach/orange tinted lenses, and small metal rivet details at the hinges; the listed variant comes in one size (54 mm eye width, 19 mm bridge, 147 mm temples) in Taupe, with a designer case and cleaning cloth included. They provide complete UVA and UVB protection but carry a Level 1 UV rating described as perfect for partly sunny days, so they suit milder light rather than intense sun. The brand, Jimmy Fairly, makes its sunglasses in France and Italy and donates a free pair to a charity for every pair sold, per a Reddit commenter.[1,2,3]Gabrie Xl Aviator Sunglasses: Choose this if you want an oversized, shield-style aviator look in a bold black acetate frame with pale yellow-amber tinted lenses that provide complete UVA and UVB protection at a Level 3 rating for sunny days. The lightweight, comfortable frame has a single continuous top bar with rounded teardrop lenses, a 53 mm eye width, 20 mm bridge, and 147 mm temples, sold in one size. A 5-point metal hinge resists handling, and a designer case and cleaning cloth are included.[4,5,6,7]Loulou Oversized Square Sunglasses: Choose this if you want an oversized square frame with a French-chic look (a characterization its fans use), rendered in lightweight, comfortable cellulose acetate with brown-tinted lenses offering complete UVA and UVB protection at a Level 3 rating suited to sunny days. The one-size taupe variant measures 51 mm eye width with a 24 mm bridge and has an integrated molded bridge with no separate nose pads, so fit preference matters. Each pair comes with a designer case and cleaning cloth, and the brand states it donates a pair of frames to someone in need for every pair bought.[8,9,10,11,12]

  • Jimmy Fairly origin and charity donation

Jimmy Fairley are made in France and Italy, they start at around €100 (I know not exactly under budget). They offer a free pair to a charity for every pair sold.

  • Shipping and prescription issues ordering to US

I was in Paris in July and ordered two pairs of progressives (they were buy one get one) on my last day in Paris. They promised to ship them to me. This was July 18th. I followed up a few weeks later via WhatsApp and they were ‘ready at the store’ but offered to ship them for free. They let me know that it should take a week to ten days, but they occasionally have customs issues. Whomever handles their WhatsApp chat is extremely kind and professional. It took several days to receive tracking, they were delayed in US customs a few days (they handled this all on their end) and arrived today. They shipped ‘no signature required’, so $800 worth of glasses were on the driveway when I got home from Pilates. When I tried them on, something is not correct. The top portion is blurry, so I fear that they made me full readers vs the progressives that I ordered. Thankfully, I will be back in Paris in mid September and then again in late October, but it’s been an interesting experience, but at least their team has been kind and easy to work with.
