It includes an adjustable hood with visor, snap-button placket over a zip closure, adjustable cuffs, underarm eyelets, snap-flap pockets, and a fishtail back hem with a tie waist belt, available in a matte olive finish. Designed for urban use and light rain, it is praised for its style but user reviews note limited breathability and better performance in light showers rather than prolonged downpours.

Product Insights

The Rains Curve Trench Raincoat (180 CAD, in stock) delivers a stylish matte finish and A-line silhouette that flatters like no technical rainwear can, weighing just 520g for a full-length trench that packs compactly. However, its waterproofing is limited: it handles light showers but wets through in prolonged downpours, shoulder seams leak under sustained rain (especially with a backpack), the PU coating may peel over time, and poor breathability and heavier weight compared to technical shells restrict it to urban commuting rather than active outdoor use.

Verified claims

Waterproof performance
Buyers confirm it handles light showers but wets through in prolonged heavy rain.
Seam integrity
Shoulder seams can leak in prolonged rain despite ultrasonic welding.
Style
Matte finish and A-line cut create a flattering drape that technical rainwear cannot replicate.
Waterproofing
Fully waterproof with welded seams, but shoulder seams may leak in sustained downpours.
Activity suitability
Heavier than a Patagonia Torrentshell and lacks breathability, limiting active use.
Water resistance
100% polyester with PU coating: 4000mm hydrostatic head; coating may peel over time.
Seam construction
Ultrasonically welded seams can leak in prolonged rain.
Real-world performance
Heavy rain performance is polarizing among owners; jacket best for urban commutes.
Durability
Polyurethane coating may peel or crack over time, compromising waterproofing.
Use case
Designed for urban commuting and light rain; may not withstand hiking or all-day downpours.
Seam leakage
Buyers report shoulder seam leakage in prolonged rain.
Silhouette
98cm length, 8cm A-line flare, 520g weight ensure sleek, non-bulky fit.
Curve naming
Curve denotes trench-coat style, not a cut for curvy bodies.
Mobility
Straight A-line cut suits city commutes, not outdoor use, per buyers.
Fit
98cm length and A-line flare provide below-knee coverage and hip room; 520g lightweight.
Weight
Weighs 520g — one of the lightest full-length waterproof trenches available.
Hood
Visor deflects mist without blocking sight; hood plus coat keeps wearer dry from head to knee.
Washing
Machine wash gentle cold or hand wash; no softener or high heat.
Care
Store away from extreme temperatures and avoid sharp folds to prevent peeling.
Portability
At 520g, the coat rolls small and dries quickly, suitable for pack-and-deploy.
Design aesthetic
Matte PU fabric and welded seams create a lightweight, clean urban silhouette.
Cultural status
Buyers note Rains jackets are ubiquitous in Copenhagen's street fashion.
Breathability
Buyers note poor breathability and heavier weight as a tradeoff for the matte finish.
Seam sealing
Shoulder seams leak after prolonged rain, especially under backpack pressure.

The Rains raincoat is praised for its stylish, lightweight design and urban waterproofing, but criticized for poor breathability, inconsistent durability, and limited heavy-rain performance.

  • Rains raincoats praised as perfect, light, and versatile

Rains are the perfect rain jackets imo. Got mine when my usual rain coat (which survived Netherlands weather!) couldn’t cut it in the incessant Danish rain, and it’s been the best purchase of the last 4 years. I love that they’re light, dry quickly and essentially have no lining so I can throw it over anything and wear it even in summer rain.

  • Concerns about Rains W3 waterproof rating for heavy rain

OK that’s interesting. I went into a rain jacket black hole at the weekend and loved the idea of Rains as they have a shop in Dublin to try different styles on. But then I noticed all their rain jackets are rated W3 which is waterproof protection from “light rain”. I couldn’t find one rated any higher than that. But you’d say it handles all types of Irish rain OK?

  • Rains material durability and limited heavy rain performance

Had a rains, bought one for my wife. I found them ok but not worth the full price tbh. They look great but the material i find doesnt last very long, mine started to fall apart after a while. Certainly fine for light showers and urban areas but not something that will keep you dry all day.

  • Comparison of Rains to Patagonia, noting breathability and weight

We saw Rains jackets EVERYWHERE in Copenhagen. I even went to a Rains store. The style everyone wears there has snaps, no zipper which is a deal breaker for me. The jacket was definitely distinct. It didn’t feel like it would breathe well at all and it felt heavier than one of the Patagonia jackets. I didn’t end up buying one.
