327 Contrasting Accent Sneakers Women
The New Balance 327 Contrasting Accent Sneakers for Women are a retro-inspired lifestyle sneaker featuring a mesh upper with faux-suede overlays, a padded footbed, and a non-skid rubber outsole. Designed for casual everyday wear, this lightweight model is well-suited for warmer months and city travel, though it runs large—sizing down is recommended. Product Insights
New Balance's 327 sneaker reimagines 1970s racing heritage into a bold fashion silhouette, unveiled at Paris Fashion Week and worn by style icons. Its lightweight mesh-and-suede construction offers above-average breathability and cushioned landings from a 35mm stack, but the plain EVA midsole provides negligible arch support and the toe runs narrow, requiring sizing up for wide feet. Buyers note the suede appears fuzzier and synthetic uppers crease, while some colorways trade mesh for stiff leather, reducing breathability. The 327 delivers a distinctive retro look and comfortable walking experience relative to the 550, yet lacks the all-day support of the 574 or 990v6, making it a summer-friendly style-first choice with a 130 CAD price tag.

Deep Research
How the 327 compares to other New Balance models
- The 550 is rooted in 1980s basketball heritage with a structured leather upper, whereas the 327 repurposes vintage 1970s runner DNA with a modern exaggerated outsole — so the choice between them is less about performance than about which nostalgic design language fits the buyer's wardrobe: classic court style or bold retro-runner flair.
- When compared head-to-head for city travel and walking, the 327's mesh-and-suede upper and more compliant EVA midsole consistently outperform the 550's hard leather cupsole, which owners describe as the firmest of the trio — so while the 550 offers a crisp court-shoe silhouette, the 327 is the friendlier choice for extended pavement use.
- The 574 is built on an ENCAP midsole that sandwiches a soft EVA core inside a rigid polyurethane rim for combined cushioning and stability, while the 327 uses a simpler EVA foam midsole without ENCAP or ABZORB — this gives the 574 a firmer, more supportive platform suited for all-day wear, whereas the 327 prioritizes lightweight flexibility for fashion-focused use.
- The New Balance 237 sits below the 327 in the vintage-inspired lineup, using thinner suede and a straightforward EVA midsole without the layered panels or exaggerated wrap-around outsole — the $80–$110 price point makes it the entry-level retro option, while the 327 commands its higher price through bolder design details and a more prominent fashion presence.
- The 327's design is a deliberate remix of New Balance's 1970s racing silhouettes — specifically the 320, 355, and SuperComp — which gives it a direct archival lineage that fashion collabs have amplified; in contrast, the 574 and 237 are broader heritage reinterpretations that lack this specific referential connection.
- Unlike the 327's fixed, non-removable insole, the 574 includes a removable footbed, allowing wearers to substitute custom orthotics — making the 574 the better choice for those who rely on arch support inserts, while the 327's integrated design limits such customization to preserve its low-profile aesthetic.
All-day comfort and arch support
- The 10 mm heel-to-toe drop gives the 327 a traditional running-shoe stance that takes pressure off the Achilles and calves compared to flatter trainers, contributing to a more familiar stride for ex-runners now wearing the shoe as a casual sneaker.
- The 327's lab-measured 35 mm heel stack is thicker than the average lifestyle sneaker, delivering a well-cushioned landing that takes the sting out of hard pavement and extends comfortable wear time during casual outings.
- Contrary to community reports that the insole is fixed, the 327 ships with a removable sockliner — verified in RunRepeat's disassembly — opening the door to aftermarket orthotic inserts for wearers who need more arch support than the flat factory footbed provides.
- At 25 mm, the forefoot stack rivals the heel stack of some sneakers, keeping the ball of the foot elevated from ground hazards and maintaining an even, protective platform under the toes — unusual for a vintage-inspired silhouette.
- At 301 g (10.6 oz) per shoe, the 327 is lighter than many retro-style competitors with similar stack heights — the mesh-and-suede build keeps weight low, reducing foot fatigue over a day of casual errands without sacrificing underfoot protection.
- Lab testing rated the 327's breathability as above-average, with superb ventilation that makes it a brilliant summer shoe; combined with the open mesh upper, heat and moisture are less likely to build during warm-weather wear, extending comfort on long afternoons out.
- The flared midsole and wider heel base — directly borrowed from 1970s track shoe design — create a broad, stable footprint that resists tipping, improving confidence on uneven sidewalks and during quick lateral movements, even though the shoe lacks a dedicated stability frame.
- A below-average 46% energy return measurement confirms that the midsole prioritizes a planted, stable ride over bouncy rebound, so each step feels controlled and predictable on uneven surfaces — a deliberate trade-off that benefits casual walkers who dislike a spongy, unstable feeling.
- The 327's midsole is a simple EVA foam without New Balance's ENCAP or ABZORB cushioning systems, which eliminates the extra weight and cost of those technologies while providing a firm, even ride — a characteristic that keeps the shoe grounded and responsive for casual use rather than offering plush all-day fatigue protection.
- In lab impact testing under the ASTM F1976 standard, the 327 returned a shock absorption value of 111 SA — significantly above the sneaker average of 89 SA — meaning the midsole effectively mutes concrete impact well beyond what its modest EVA suggests, a key reason it feels cushiony straight out of the box.
How the 327 became a fashion staple
- The 327’s oversized N logo traces directly to the 1976 New Balance 320 — the first NB model to feature the sidewall N — and the shoe’s studded wraparound outsole derives from the 1977 Super Comp, so the silhouette reads as a curated edit of the brand’s most iconic design codes rather than a generic seventies throwback.
- The 327’s midsole avoids visible ENCAP or ABZORB cushioning — a deliberate design choice that strips out performance-brand signifiers and places the shoe in the quiet-luxury lane, where it can pair equally with tailored joggers, midi dresses, or linen trousers, explaining its appeal to both fashion editors and minimal-style celebrities.
- The 320 — the primary archival reference for the 327 — was on Tom Fleming’s feet when he won the 1975 New York City Marathon, a genuine performance credential that gives the lifestyle-oriented 327 a legitimate athletic lineage rarely found in retro-fashion sneakers.
- The 327 was first seen on Charaf Tajer’s Casablanca runway at Paris Fashion Week in January 2020, four months before its retail launch — a fashion-first introduction that bypassed typical sneaker hype cycles and generated the viral, organic demand that caught even its designer off guard.
- Meghan Markle was photographed in bone-and-grey 327s in Santa Barbara, while Bella Hadid, Justin Bieber, Chrissy Teigen, and Jennifer Aniston have all been documented wearing the silhouette — a roster that spans royalty, high fashion, pop music, and lifestyle, demonstrating the 327’s ability to integrate into both streetwear and polished casual wardrobes without feeling out of place.
- New Balance Senior Footwear Designer Charlotte Lee, with the brand since 2014, carved the first 327 prototype out of florist’s foam in 2018, a hands-on process that yielded a silhouette far removed from a straightforward retro reissue — giving the 327 an identity rooted in creative exploration rather than replication.
- The 327 crossed from trend item to wardrobe staple around 2022, and by 2025 fashion outlets documented it resurging on the streets of Paris, Milan, and Copenhagen fashion weeks, confirming that the silhouette has outlasted the typical 12-18 month sneaker cycle and now functions as a consistent, seasonless option.
How the 327 fits and sizing down
- Fresh out of the box the 327 feels rigid and snug due to the tapered shape and stiff new materials; after several wears the nylon-and-suede upper relaxes enough that the fit transitions from tight to comfortably snug, a shift that causes some to misjudge the size as too small initially.
- Different colorways of the 327 use either a supple suede-and-mesh upper or a stiffer synthetic-leather build; the mesh-and-suede version on the 'Assorted White' pair breathes better and has more give out of the box, making it roomier than the synthetic variant often found on dark colorways.
- Lab measurements and wearer consensus confirm the 327 runs true to size in length but sharply narrow through the midfoot and toebox; standard-width feet get a secure, honest fit in their usual size, while wide feet should go half a size up to avoid lateral pinch—this is the core trade-off, not a simple 'size down' scenario.
- Despite the seller’s recommendation to size down, independent lab data and a large Zappos survey (71% true-to-size) show the length runs standard; sizing down would shorten the already tapered toebox, so most buyers will achieve a better fit by keeping their usual size and only adjusting up for width.
Durability and care of the faux-suede
- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade the synthetic suede's color and weaken its fibers, so storing the shoes out of sustained UV light when not worn helps keep the contrasting overlays vivid and the material supple over time.
- After cleaning or if the shoes get wet, letting them air-dry in a well-ventilated space away from radiators or direct sun preserves the faux-suede's texture and prevents the synthetic fibers from warping or stiffening.
- Unlike real suede, these faux-suede overlays can be safely spot-cleaned with a soft-bristled brush and a mild dish-soap-and-water solution — just test on a hidden area first to avoid dye transfer, making routine maintenance a task that doesn't demand expensive suede-specific cleaners.
- The 327's faux-suede overlays are a polyester/polyurethane synthetic blend that inherently repels water and resists stains better than real suede — a spilled drink or a rainy day won't leave water marks like it would on traditional suede, so the overlays stay looking cleaner through daily wear.
The '70s running shoe roots of the 327
- The 327's oversized N logo traces directly back to the 1976 New Balance 320, the first model to feature the brand's N mark — making the prominent side branding on the 327 a historically grounded design statement, not just a modern aesthetic choice.
- The 327 was first unveiled not via a brand campaign but on the Paris Fashion Week FW20 runway in January 2020 as part of a collaboration with Casablanca, instantly positioning the silhouette within high-fashion circles and setting off a level of demand that, per the designer, far exceeded initial expectations.
- The 327 landed at a moment when 70s running-shoe shapes were returning to fashion, with designer Charlotte Lee observing the emerging trend across runways and brands — meaning the silhouette wasn't just a retro exercise but a strategically timed release that amplified its cultural relevance.
- New Balance designer Charlotte Lee began the 327 project in late 2018, intentionally layering iconic 320, 355, and SuperComp elements to make the shoe feel both familiar and surprising — this remixed, rather than retro, design philosophy is why the 327 looks distinct from New Balance's traditional dad-shoe aesthetic and appeals to a fashion-forward audience.
- The SuperComp, a 1977 road racer that emphasized lightweight materials and grip, contributes the 327's airy upper construction and the fan-shaped detailing on the toe box — details that link the shoe to New Balance's performance heritage and keep the design visually light rather than chunky.
- The 327 borrows its distinctive wraparound studded rubber outsole from the 1977 New Balance 355 trail runner — a feature originally designed for off-road stability that now gives the lifestyle shoe a rugged, directional look and a tactile heel detail that catches attention.

Fashionably comfortable
Whether you're pairing them with jeans, joggers, or a casual dress, the New Balance 327 seamlessly integrates into any wardrobe. Its versatility, combined with superior comfort, makes it a standout in both style and wearability. If you're looking for a sneaker that combines retro charm with modern comfort, the New Balance 327 is a great choice.
Un coup de coeur
J'adore ces espadrilles. Un réel coup de coeur. Elles sont super confortables et la grandeur est "true to size". Elles sont assez légères. Elles peuvent faire "chic" ou plus sportif.
Très confortable
J'adore
Exactly what I was looking for
I wanted a comfy but trendy neutral running shoe. I couldn’t be more happy.
J’adore
Confortable, belle couleur beige, j’adore la shape du soulier. Je les adore! Je porte habituellement du 7 ou 7. 5 donc 7 était parfait pour moi. J’avais déjà des New balance donc je savais que le 7 me faisait.
Not what I expected
These shoes looked very cheap in fabrication. The black is a plastic material that wrinkles when you walk. I was disappointed to see they had white accents combined with off-white soles. This made them look a bit strange.
Très jolie et super confortable.

Very structured, comfortable shoe.
Cool and comfortable
Love this style, very comfortable. Fits true to size
Love these comfort and stylish BUT. .
I absolutely love these but everyone should be aware, even if you dont think you have wide feet, to double check. . . As I never had issue before, these are getting ruined after wearing twice as my feet are supposedly too wide for these and destroying the shows which I can no longer return. . . but overall very comfortable and stylish, just wish I knew how extremely narrow they are. .

Q&A
6 answered- I have wide feet; does this style come in a wide width option, or is the fit particularly narrow?
- This style does not offer a wide width option, and the fit is noted as narrow, so it may not be comfortable for wide feet.
- How durable is the mesh upper over time, especially with daily wear? Are there common issues like tearing or stretching?
- User feedback does not commonly report issues like tearing or stretching with the mesh upper, suggesting it holds up well under daily wear.
- What is the best way to clean the faux-suede overlays without damaging them?

327. I think they look great on women but there’s just something about the shape.

Former NB employee criticizes 327 comfort and insert limitations
they don’t begin to have the orthopedic benefits of 96% of contemporary NB sneakers. The flat insoles are garbage, and the shape doesn’t even allow for switching them out to a typical Ortholite insert.

Positive long-term experience with 327s
I’ve worn my 327s so much over the past year and a half. They’re a nice lightweight shoe so they’re great for warmer months. I’ve gotten many compliments on them from friends and family that know nothing about shoes.

327 preferred over 550 for all-day comfort and city travel
327 all the way. 550s are great but since it’s a leather shoe it’ll be worse compared to a lifestyle runner and isn’t practical for city travels in my opinion.
