Product Insights
Birkenstock's Arizona sandal in brown oiled leather, priced at $210 and in stock, is the brand's unchanged top seller since 1973, accounting for a third of sales. Its 2.8–3.2 mm full-grain oiled leather upper self-heals, develops patina, and outlasts the sole, resisting splashes but not fully waterproof; water and oil spots are temporary. The cork-latex footbed, backed by podiatrists, provides firmer arch support, deeper heel stability, a deep heel cup, toe grip bar, and arch supports that align and stabilize the foot. However, it requires weeks to months of break-in, molds to foot contours while the width remains fixed, and the narrow fit is 4–5 mm narrower at the ball. Minor scratches can be rubbed out, and full resoling costs $45–55, replacing both cork footbed and sole. The Arizona has journeyed from health-food stores to Steve Jobs, Marc Jacobs runways, and high-fashion collaborations.

Durability and care insights for oiled leather Arizonas
Oiled leather is great, as long as you are willing to care for them. Indeed, they will often appear scuffed, uneven color-wise, absorb skin oils and thus have dark spots, etc. But this is part of the charm of having oiled leather, and as long as you use leather cleaner on a regular basis, you can smooth all this out and they will look better over time. (As long as you are okay with any color darkening). The main thing I've noticed is the thickness. I love how thick they feel compared to other strap styles.

Break-in difficulties and patina on habana (brown) oiled leather
The oiled leather can start our soft or very sharp/hard, depending which pair you happen to buy. They typically eventually break in, but I do have one habana pair that I’ve about given upon because the leather is so stiff it hurts. They can get spots on the straps easily but also can develop a cool patina when worn in.

Oiled leather straps hold shape better than suede; break-in tips
Oiled leather straps hold their shape better. The straps can be stiff, depending on pair, but you can break them in slowly if needed. They are more amenable to being worn a little snug as you adjust to walking in Birks. (The straps nearest to toes can be worn snug when breaking in — the other should allow at least a finger between foot and strap.)

Preference for natural patina development without balm
I may do that, but I’d love to see how the leather fares on its own first, without any cleaning or balming. Theres a nice patina on the sides that I really like the look of
