Product Insights

The Hoka White Transport 2 delivers a 36% improvement in energy return over its predecessor via a 61.6% energy return, 4mm heel stack increase, and 7mm drop with a gentler rocker, all backed by an APMA Seal of Acceptance; its sugarcane EVA midsole matches petroleum EVA performance while reducing carbon footprint, the Cordura upper uses 100% recycled polyester yet resists scratches and pokes, and the Vibram EcoStep outsole with 30% recycled rubber grips wet and dry surfaces as well as light snow — but the narrow toe box persists in wide sizes, requiring half to full size up, and the PFC-free DWR sheds only light rain and dew, wetting out in puddles, while the shoe remains more breathable than GTX, avoiding heat and blisters in warm weather, making it the most versatile walking shoe tested, comfortable on both sidewalks and singletrack.

Deep Research

How the Transport 2 improves on the original

  • The offset drops from 9 mm to 7 mm, shifting the foot into a more natural alignment and smoothing out the heel-to-toe transition for walkers who disliked the original's taller heel ramp.
  • Energy return nearly doubles from 45.3 % to 61.6 %, injecting a liveliness that was absent in the original — the Transport 2 now feels springy underfoot rather than just cushioned.
  • Heel stack grows by 4 mm to 38.0 mm, a meaningful bump that deepens the protective cushioning layer without pushing the shoe into maximalist territory.
  • Lab-measured heel cushioning rises from 116 SA to 124 SA, a 7 % jump that translates to noticeably less joint fatigue during hours on concrete and hardpack.
  • The pronounced heel-to-toe taper of the original is replaced with a gentler rocker that engages at the ball of the foot, reducing the ‘tippy’ feeling when standing and making the shoe less fatiguing for mixed-paced walking.
  • A softer sockliner and plusher collar padding directly address the first-generation's ankle-hotspot complaints, making the step-in feel immediately more luxurious without altering the midsole character.

Cordura upper durability and breathability

  • The PFC-free water repellent treatment not only sheds light moisture but also prevented visible dirt buildup on the white colorway during testing, keeping the shoe looking newer longer — a practical advantage for a travel or everyday shoe that encounters changing ground conditions.
  • The Cordura upper is specifically rated as scratch- and poke-resistant in wear testing, so it stands up to rocks, brush, and daily scuffs without tearing or fraying — a meaningful durability margin over the soft knits and meshes common in lifestyle walking shoes.

City-to-trail versatility and real-world use

  • A light rocker starting at the ball of the toes gently propels you forward on pavement without a sense of imbalance when standing still, while feeling less aggressive than the previous Transport’s taper — this means the shoe transitions smoothly from standing on hard surfaces to walking uneven ground without forcing an unnatural gait.
  • At 36mm in the heel and 31mm in the forefoot, the midsole provides enough cushioning to blunt sharp sidewalk impacts while staying firm enough to prevent the unstable, mushy feel that max-cushion shoes can have on softer trail ground — testers called this the 'just right' balance that makes the shoe equally usable for city walking and light hiking.
  • The PFC-free DWR on the Cordura upper sheds light rain and dew, while the abrasion-resistant Cordura tongue withstands scrapes on brushy trails — this weather and durability protection means the shoe can handle a mixed route that starts with a damp city sidewalk and continues through overgrown park paths without leaving feet wet or the upper damaged.
  • The Vibram EcoStep outsole's exposed lugs deliver reliable traction on pavement, gravel, and light trails, and multiple testers report it handles wet conditions and sloppy city weather without slipping — this lets the Transport 2 credibly serve as a single shoe for both paved commutes and off-road weekend walks.
  • Reviewers walked the Transport 2 on Denver city sidewalks, Front Range singletrack, Michigan dirt roads, woodland paths, and canal tracks, confirming stable and grippy performance across pavement, loose gravel, and hard-packed dirt without missing a step — the breadth of these test environments is why multiple outlets call it the most versatile walking shoe.

All-day comfort and cushioning upgrades

  • Energy return leaped from 45.3% to 61.6%, delivering a bouncier, running-shoe-like liveliness that helps maintain a brisk pace with less effort—particularly valuable on long days when stride fatigue sets in.
  • A subtle rocker that initiates near the forefoot passively guides each step forward, smoothing the heel-to-toe transition without destabilizing while standing—testers noted it feels like a natural, low-effort walk even after covering long distances.
  • A flexible forefoot combined with a significantly stiffer midfoot and heel—confirmed by physical twist tests—creates a stable base that prevents foot pronation fatigue during all-day standing or off-road walking, without sacrificing a natural toe-off feel.
  • The Transport 2 earned the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, an independent endorsement of foot-healthy design that gives buyers confidence the shoe is structurally suitable for long-term, daily wear.
  • Hoka added more padding to the collar and upgraded the sockliner to be softer and bouncier, directly responding to feedback about ankle irritation—an update that multiple testers confirmed eliminates break-in discomfort and keeps ankles happy over repeated miles.
  • Lab tests measured heel shock absorption at 124 SA—a 7% jump over the original Transport—meaning the shoe attenuates more impact before it reaches joints, which directly reduces fatigue when pounding pavement for hours.
  • TreelineReview logged 7-hour brewery shifts in the Transport 2 and experienced no discomfort, confirming that the cushioning holds up not just for miles of walking but also for extended static standing—a critical concern for workers or travelers on their feet all day.

Sugarcane EVA midsole and sustainable construction

  • The Transport 2's upgraded sockliner is softer and bouncier than the original's, delivering a more luxurious step-in feel that complements the supportive sugarcane midsole rather than fighting it.
  • Because sugarcane absorbs CO₂ during growth, replacing petroleum ethylene with sugarcane-derived ethanol in the EVA foam reduces the midsole's cradle-to-gate carbon footprint beyond what a simple 'less oil' narrative suggests—it actively leverages a renewable carbon cycle.
  • Sugarcane EVA is already a mainstream material adopted by major brands across performance and lifestyle lines, so the Transport 2's bio-foam is not an untested experiment—it's a proven alternative that reduces reliance on fossil fuels without forcing the buyer to gamble on unproven performance.
  • Despite its 100% recycled polyester construction, the Cordura upper is not a weak point—independent testers found the rip-stop fabric tough and built to last, meaning the recycled content does not sacrifice the tear and abrasion resistance that makes Cordura a staple in outdoor gear.
  • The 30% sugarcane-based EVA midsole delivers cushioning and weight characteristics nearly identical to conventional petroleum-based EVA, so the shift to a bio-content foam does not introduce a comfort penalty, while reducing the shoe's raw-material carbon footprint.

Vibram EcoStep outsole traction and grip

  • The Vibram outsole is described as very grippy on all surfaces, even wet, so the Transport 2 maintains secure footing during rainy commutes and dewy-morning walks without the slip risk common to lifestyle-first soles.
  • Treeline Review found the outsole offered enough grip for lightly snowy paths, extending the shoe's useful season beyond dry trails and into early winter or shoulder-season walks.
  • In testing across woodland tracks, canal paths, and routes that shifted from pavement to dirt and loose gravel, the Transport 2's Vibram outsole provided reliable traction without slipping, confirming it handles the unpredictable surfaces of a typical urban-to-trail walk.
  • Despite the trail-capable tread, the outsole also copes with slippery sidewalks and hard indoor floors like linoleum or tile, so it won't let you down when the route includes a grocery store or subway station.
  • Compared to the original Transport, the Transport 2's new Vibram outsole delivers a slight traction upgrade, making it a more capable crossover for those who found the first version limited on mixed ground.
  • The outsole is Vibram's EcoStep Recycle EVO, a compound containing at least 30% recycled rubber that was engineered to improve grip on both wet and dry surfaces over previous eco-formulations, meaning the sustainable material choice does not compromise traction in everyday use.

Chaussures légères

Laura-Lee T.

Q&A

8 answered
How does the water resistance perform in practice—can it handle light rain or puddles, or is it just a light DWR treatment?
The water resistance is a PFC-free DWR treatment on the CORDURA upper, which handles light rain and splashes well but is not intended for puddles or prolonged wet conditions. It's a surface-level repellency, not a waterproof membrane, so it will wet out eventually.
Is the speed-lace system adjustable for a customized fit and can the laces be replaced if they break?
Yes, the speed-lace system is adjustable for a customized fit by pulling the lace to tighten and releasing to loosen. If the laces break, a pair of regular laces is included for replacement, so you can continue using the shoe with standard laces.
What type of midsole foam does the Transport 2 use (e.g., CMEVA, PB, etc.) and how does its cushioning compare to the Clifton or Challenger ATR?
The Transport 2 uses a standard EVA foam midsole (likely compression-molded EVA, not the premium foams like CMEVA+ or PEBA found in the Clifton or Challenger ATR. The cushioning is firmer and less responsive, more suited for casual walking than running, whereas the Clifton offers plush, rockered cushioning and the Challenger ATR provides additional trail grip and protection.
Is the removable foam footbed separate from the sugarcane EVA insole, and what arch support does it provide?
The removable foam footbed is the same component as the sugarcane EVA insole – it is a single removable sockliner made from EVA with 30% sugar cane content. It provides mild arch support, similar to a standard contoured footbed; for higher arch support, you can replace it with an orthotic.
Are Hoka Transport shoes good for trail running?
No, they are not designed for running; cushioning and grip are inadequate for trails.
Should I get the GTX waterproof version?
It's great for wet conditions but can be hot and cause blisters in warm weather. Breathability is limited.
How do they fit, especially in width?
The toe box is narrow; consider sizing up or getting the wide version, but even wide may still feel narrow.
How durable are the soles?
The Vibram sole wears down faster on cement and asphalt; better suited for natural surfaces or lighter use.

Compared To

vs Hoka Clifton 9

Clifton 9 offers more cushioning, support, and Meta Rocker for a smoother walking experience, while Transport is a casual lifestyle shoe with less technical features.

vs Hoka Bondi

Bondi has a more durable sole for hard surfaces; Transport's Vibram sole is softer and wears faster on cement and asphalt.

Source Threads

  • Waterproofing causes blisters in hot weather

Wear merino wool socks, waterproof shoes also trap moisture in and I’m guessing you’re wearing cotton socks which are staying damp and giving you blisters… waterproof shoes aren’t the best choice for hot weather

    u/darthrj9View thread →

  • Comparison to Clifton 9 and casual use

My first instinct is to go with the Clifton 9s. The transports come in Gore-Tex (GTX) Waterproof, so if you're planning to be in extreme weather/value waterproof shoes, those will be that. However, they really are more of an everyday casual/lifestyle shoe. They don't have as much support or cushion as the Clifton 9s and don't have as much of a Meta Rocker, so the walking movement won't be as smooth (in my opinion, at least.)

    u/strawberrrysoupView thread →

  • Not recommended for running or trails

I would not recommend for running. Not good cushioning, not good grip for trail.

    u/markofjohnsonView thread →

  • Sole durability on hard surfaces

I don’t recommend the Transport for cement and asphalt. The vibram on the bottom is to provide mega grip to natural surfaces (gravel, trails, etc) but it’s softer than say the sole of the Clifton and Bondi. It will wear down faster on cement and asphalt.
