Product Insights

Since 1986, the Hanky Panky Stretch Lace Thong Nylon has been the flagship thong trademarked as the World's Most Comfortable Thong, using one-size stretch lace to fit sizes 4–16 and adapt to hips 36–45 inches without riding up, with a moisture-wicking cotton gusset for comfort; proper hand-washing and air-drying preserve the lace and spandex, leading to reported lifespans over a decade, but buyers note permanent stretching with weight fluctuations and unhelpful customer service from direct website orders.

Deep Research

One-size stretch lace fit across body types

  • The original rise cut features a V-shape at both the front and back waistband that sits above the hip bone without digging — unlike low-rise thongs, this design distributes tension across a wider band of stretch lace, so it stays flat under pants and feels secure rather than restrictive.
  • The proprietary lace blend maintains its snap-back elasticity year after year even with regular washing — it doesn't bag out in the seat or curl at the edges, which is why users who have worn them for a decade still find the fit as secure as day one, provided they skip the dryer.
  • The one-size stretch nylon lace comfortably covers a broader range than the official 4-14 tag — real-world feedback shows it works on a size 16 without overstretching, and long-time wearers report the thong moves with body changes between size 6 and 14, meaning most women who wear street sizes 4-16 will find a forgiving, personalized fit without needing the plus version.
  • Hanky Panky has trademarked the claim of the world's most comfortable thong since 1986 — this isn't a seasonal campaign line but a four-decade conviction that the stretch lace original rise thong delivers a chafe-free, stay-put fit that has earned a cult following; buying in means you're getting the same construction that has made it the brand's #1 style for nearly 40 years, not a seasonal experiment.

Care and longevity for stretch lace thongs

  • In situations where hand-washing isn’t feasible, placing the thong in a mesh lingerie bag on a cold delicate cycle — as Hanky Panky themselves advise — shields the lace from snagging, but it should remain a rare exception because even gentle machine agitation shortens spandex’s lifespan.
  • The SUPIMA cotton gusset can be gently rubbed between fingertips with a drop of delicate wash while the lace soaks, which cleans the absorbent cotton without pulling on the attached lace — a targeted technique that keeps the whole garment hygienic without risking damage.
  • Fabric softeners leave a coating on spandex that weakens its stretch and promotes fiber aging — a rule that the care tag omits but that is critical for preserving the thong’s elasticity, as the trim contains 10% spandex.
  • Gravity stretches wet elastic — as seen with bra straps elongating up to 7% in 24 hours when hung — so laying the thong flat to dry rather than hanging by the waistband prevents the lace trim from losing its shape and grip over time.
  • A 30-minute soak in cool water with delicate wash dissolves body oils without any mechanical agitation, so the lace avoids the pilling and micro-tears that occur when the fabric is rubbed or wrung — it’s a passive step that significantly extends the thong’s smooth texture.
  • The open nylon lace snags on sharp jewelry, rough skin, and textured surfaces, so wearing it with smooth skin and avoiding abrasive contact prevents the pilling and pulled threads that accelerate the garment’s degradation.
  • The 10% spandex in the lace trim loses its elastic recovery when exposed to heat and alkaline detergents, which break the polymer bonds — so hand-washing in cool water is the only way to keep the thong’s signature ‘hug without pinch’ fit intact over months rather than weeks.

Nylon lace comfort and breathability

  • The crotch is lined with SUPIMA® cotton, an extra-long-staple fiber that is smoother and more durable than standard cotton, putting a natural, breathable layer against the body where moisture and heat buildup would be most uncomfortable — a detail that makes the thong viable for all-day wear without compromising the delicate nylon lace aesthetic.
  • Hanky Panky has held the registered trademark for 'World’s Most Comfortable Thong' since introducing the Signature Lace style in 1986 — a rare legally-backed comfort claim that signals decades of consistent design and material refinement around the nylon lace's feel.

How it compares to the Signature Lace thong

  • Lining the most sensitive area, the 100% SUPIMA® cotton gusset uses long-staple, American-grown fibers that are measurably finer and stronger than ordinary cotton — it stays softer longer and resists pilling through repeated hand-washing, a tangible upgrade for all-day wear.
  • The body and trim knit from 100% nylon with 10% spandex at the edges yields Hanky Panky's hallmark four-way stretch — it conforms to the body without binding, snaps back after wear, and feels 'nearly naked' in a way that has defined the brand's thongs since the 1970s.

SUPIMA cotton gusset benefits for hygiene and comfort

  • Supima is a trademarked fiber subject to third-party certification and even forensic DNA testing — so the “Pure SUPIMA® cotton gusset” on this thong is a verifiable claim of genuine American-grown Pima cotton, not a generic “supima” tag.
  • Because the SUPIMA® label mandates 100% Supima fiber content, this gusset contains no polyester or standard cotton blend — meaning it delivers the full softness, breathability, and absorbency of a luxury natural fiber without synthetic dilution, right where it matters most.
  • Supima cotton fibers measure at least 1.5 inches — roughly 35% longer than standard cotton — which yields a tightly twisted, pill-resistant yarn that stands up to the constant friction of the thigh area without roughing up, keeping the gusset smooth and intact longer.
  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists specifically recommends underwear with a cotton crotch lining to prevent yeast infections and irritation; this thong meets that standard with a 100% Supima cotton gusset, combining the hygienic baseline with premium long-staple softness.
  • Supima's extra-long staple fiber structure makes it up to 45% stronger than conventional cotton, so the gusset resists thinning and tearing under the stress of repeated wear and wash cycles — a practical longevity advantage for a daily-wear thong.
  • Supima cotton is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, actively pulling sweat away from the skin into the fiber and releasing it — a critical function in a thong gusset where the surrounding nylon lace would otherwise trap heat and moisture, promoting irritation.

Q&A

8 answered
What specific hip and waist measurements does the 'one size' fit?
The One Size (4-14) of the Signature Lace Original Rise Thong fits hip measurements of 36"–45" and corresponds to dress sizes 4–14 [2]. Waist measurements are not explicitly listed for this style, but the general size chart shows a 26"–27" waist for dress size 4–6 and 30"–33" for size 12–14 [2].
Is the stretch in the lace from spandex blended into the nylon or from the construction (e.g., knit pattern)?
The stretch in the lace comes primarily from the knit construction, not from spandex. The main lace fabric is 100% nylon [1]. Spandex (10%) is only present in the trim (e.g., waistband), not in the lace body itself [1].
Can this thong be machine washed and dried, or is hand washing recommended to preserve elasticity?
Hand washing is strongly recommended to preserve elasticity. Machine drying is not recommended as heat can damage the stretch properties of the elastic [3]. Machine washing on a gentle cycle in a lingerie bag is acceptable only when hand washing isn't possible [3].
If the lace stretches out over time, does it regain its shape after washing or is the stretch permanent?
Community reports indicate that the lace can stretch out over time, especially with weight fluctuations or pregnancy, and this stretching may be permanent rather than fully reversible after washing [1]. Gentle hand washing and air drying can help minimize further stretching, but significant elongation often doesn't snap back completely.
Are Hanky Panky thongs durable?
Yes, many users report their pairs lasting over a decade with no holes or torn lace, especially when air-dried.
Is it worth the high price?
Most users feel they are worth the investment due to their longevity, and recommend buying during sales.
How should I care for them?
Air dry is crucial; hand washing or machine washing cold is recommended. Avoid the dryer to maintain elasticity.
What about sizing?
They claim one size fits most, but plus sizes are available. Some prefer the low-rise style for less fabric.

  • Hanky Panky thongs last long and don't tear

They might seem on the pricey side, but they last a while - just make sure to air dry rather than use the dryer. And even when they age, they just stretch out a bit. I've never gotten holes, and the lace has never torn like most lace does.

  • Switching to Hanky Panky lace thongs as long-lasting replacement

I just started replacing all my ill fitting and worn pairs with Hanky Panky, and while it’s pretty pricey and I can only speak to their lace thongs, they’re worth it when bought on sale I’m pretty happy with this move.

  • Hanky Panky thongs: comfortable, durable, and perfect for travel

Hanky Panky, exclusively. They are SO comfy (I’m a size 12 and buy the plus sized ones, even though they claim they’re one size fits all), pack down tiny, don’t ride up, can be very easily hand washed and dry so fast. I’ve had some for more than a decade, they may be lace but they’re built to last.

  • Previous Hanky Panky fan switched to Target due to stretching lace

I used to be an avowed Hanky Panky girl, but it was depressing me to stretch out the lace so I started getting the “cheap, whatever” underwear from Target and have never looked back.

  • Warning: Poor customer service experience ordering from Hanky Panky website

I have to warn you all - Hanky Panky has HORRIBLE customer service. I ordered items from them 7 weeks ago that arrived incorrectly - they sent me the wrong sizes. I cannot use them, they are huge on me. They have been extremely slow to respond to emails, and when they finally atempted to resend the order with the correct sizes, they just sent the same wrong sizes again! Now I have asked for a labewl to return everything and get a full refund as I don't trust them to make this right. They have not answered me for over a week! I cannot warn you off them enough. Perhaps buying in a store is fine, but DO NOT order from their website. They are terrible.
