The ties at the base are not sewn into the fabric, so you can remove them if desired. The material is light and soft, they feel lovely on. I would have purchased them in L if I had known the low rise design before; I think the additional looseness and length is worth the inch or two more of space in the centre inseam, plus I would feel more confident wearing fitted tops showcasing the beautiful rouched elastic waistline.
