The expanders help, but honestly, I rarely need them. The small is perfect for carry-on, I can fit about a week's worth of clothes with an extra set of shoes, great for work trips. The fit is really large. I hardly ever fill the thing up to the brim. I can easily fit 3+ weeks' worth of clothing and 3 pairs of shoes with room to spare. It is also very light, I am almost always under 40lbs.
