While I've read of a woodworker's gluing 1/8" veneer to a substrate, the thickest veneers are likely just under 1/16" thick. There's a thread on Fine Woodworking where a user believes the thickest ought to be 3/32". Varying or uncontrolled humidity exposure, loose cut, or highly porous/ring porous wood species veneer can also suffer from *veneer checking*. "Veneer checks are formed when stress failures occur in the face veneer, caused by differential shrinkage or swelling between the face veneer and the panel substrate to which it is applied." from NC State Extension article *Understanding and Minimizing Veneer Checking on Furniture Panels*. The nightstand's lacquer coating can *slow* moisture changes and possibly lessen or prevent veneer checking. But lacquer finishes themselves can also check or crack, sometimes seen with rapid temperature or humidity changes.
